For his first Leadership Live session of the fall semester, Lecturer Don Finucane ’26 welcomed fellow DBA alumnus Wes Griffin ’26, Business Ex*****on Consultant at Wells Fargo, to speak with his class.

Wes shared lessons from his military career and his transition into banking, emphasizing the value of building a clear career path and staying open to roles that help you reach your long‑term goals.

As a leader, Wes highlighted the importance of building high‑performing teams by giving people room to demonstrate their strengths, understanding what motivates each individual and rallying everyone around shared values. He also underscored the value of bringing original ideas and creative problem‑solving to an organization, especially in the age of AI.

This kind of direct access to leaders who have successfully navigated complex careers is what sets a Charlotte education apart.

Thank you to Danielle Avery ’19 (Capital One), David Brand (Sharonview Federal Credit Union) Tia Pulliam ’15 ( U.S. Bank), Michelle Rivkovich ’17 (Truist) and Catherine Stewart (Vanguard) for speaking with our students last week about their careers in finance.

Their insights gave students a real look at the range of paths in the finance industry and how to navigate them. Building relationships with alumni and other experienced professionals is a big part of what makes a Charlotte education so impactful.

On September 23, the Belk College of Business will host the North Carolina Economic Forum, a special event honoring the legacy of the late Dr. John Connaughton’s 45 years of leadership and introducing the new North Carolina Economic Impact Center.

The program features a panel of leading economists discussing the state and national economies, including Patrick Schorno, Chief Economist at the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission, Mark Vitner, Chief Economist at Piedmont Crescent Capital, James LaBar, Chief Economic and Community Development Officer at Charlotte Center City Partners and Craig Depken, Chair of the Department of Economics at UNC Charlotte. The conversation will be moderated by Richard Buttimer, Dean of the Belk College of Business.

The CFP Board and the Belk College of Business are hosting a regional Planner Pathways event on Thursday, Sept. 17, 3–5 p.m. in Popp Martin Student Union, room 340.

Students from all majors are invited to explore careers in financial planning, wealth management and financial services. You’ll hear from an industry panel moderated by a student from the Wealth Management Organization and meet firms offering a range of business models and entry points.
