Accelerate Academy & Reading Tutor Rx are excited to offer a 6-Week Summer Academic Accelerator led by Valery Ayelov.

🩺 Incoming UNC Medical Student
This program helps students strengthen math, reading, and writing skills while building confidence before the next school year in a small group setting (maximum 5 students).
Elementary, Middle School, or High School
Are Welcome! Smaller age/grade groups will be formed from each block/session and all content differentiated and personalized.

At Reading Tutor Rx & Accelerate Academy, we believe every learner deserves the tools, understanding, and encouragement to reach their full potential in reading and writing.

What Is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. It affects a person’s ability to read, spell, write, and process language. It’s characterized by difficulties in accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding skills.
Brain imaging studies show that the brains of individuals with dyslexia work differently — the connections in the back portion of the brain responsible for reading are less efficient.

Key Characteristics & Indicators
While dyslexia presents differently for each individual, common traits include:
• Difficulty with phonemic awareness (hearing and manipulating individual sounds in words)
• Struggles with letter–sound correspondence and sound-symbol connections
• Trouble decoding (reading unfamiliar words) and encoding (spelling)
• Slow, labored reading and frequent errors in reading aloud
• Spelling difficulties that may persist even into older grades
Because dyslexia occurs on a continuum, some individuals show mild forms while others face more significant challenges.

How Common Is Dyslexia?
• Dyslexia is thought to affect up to 20% of the population, making it the most common learning disability.
• It accounts for 80% of all specific learning disabilities.
• Many children with dyslexia remain undiagnosed and struggle quietly without the right support.

Best Practices: How to Support Learners with Dyslexia
At Reading Tutor Rx & Accelerate Academy, our philosophy aligns with evidence-based practices.
1 Early Screening and Intervention
The earlier dyslexia is identified, the more effective the intervention can be.
2 Structured Literacy Instruction
This approach explicitly teaches phonology, sound–symbol correspondences, syllable patterns, morphology, syntax, and semantics in a systematic and cumulative way.
3 Multisensory Learning
Combining visual, auditory, and kinesthetic/tactile methods helps strengthen neural pathways and reinforce learning.
4 Specific, Measurable Goals
Instruction should be data-driven, with clear steps for progress monitoring.
5 Accommodations & Supports
Use tools such as extended time, audiobooks, spell-check, or alternative formats to reduce frustration and promote access.
6 Positive Reinforcement
Celebrate every success — building confidence is just as important as improving skills.
