“El Gran Varón” by Willie Colón was incredibly progressive for its time—and there’s a much deeper story behind this salsa classic.

Written by Panamanian songwriter Omar Alfanno and popularized by salsa legend Willie Colón in 1989, “El Gran Varón” tells the story of Simón, who grows up under the expectations of a traditional father, moves away, lives openly with a feminine identity, and eventually faces rejection from the person whose acceptance mattered most.

But this wasn't simply a fictional salsa story.

Alfanno has explained that the song was inspired by someone he knew growing up, and he wrote it during the height of the 1980s AIDS crisis, when LGBTQ+ people faced enormous levels of stigma, discrimination, family rejection, and fear.

That context makes “El Gran Varón” remarkable.

At a time when conversations about gender identity, sexuality, HIV/AIDS, machismo, and LGBTQ+ acceptance were often considered taboo throughout Latin America, one of salsa's biggest stars was singing a six-minute story about those very subjects.

The song was controversial. Some radio stations reportedly refused to play it. Yet it became one of Willie Colón's most recognizable songs and eventually reached #13 on Billboard's Hot Latin Songs chart.

More than three decades later, people still debate its lyrics. Some language and ideas haven't aged perfectly. But for the late 1980s, putting a story about gender identity, rejection, AIDS, and the consequences of intolerance into mainstream Latin music was extraordinary.

“El Gran Varón” wasn't just salsa—it forced an entire generation to have a conversation.

And that's why we're still talking about Simón today.

Why are data centers becoming so controversial across America?

The rapid growth of AI, cloud computing, and Big Tech is driving demand for massive data centers—but communities are asking what that growth could mean for their electricity bills, water supply, power grid, land, noise, and local environment.

Supporters argue that data centers can bring major investment, construction projects, tax revenue, and jobs to local communities.

Critics are asking a different question: Who actually pays for all of the infrastructure needed to support them?

Modern data centers can consume enormous amounts of electricity, and some facilities also require significant amounts of water for cooling. As companies race to build more AI infrastructure, communities across the country are debating whether residents could ultimately bear some of the costs of expanding the electrical grid and other infrastructure.

This isn't simply a debate about technology.

It's a debate about AI, energy consumption, water usage, electricity prices, environmental impact, economic development, and who benefits when Big Tech comes to town.

And with more data centers being proposed across the United States, this conversation is coming to more communities.

November 3rd is Election Day. Are you registered to vote?

Before November 3, 2026, take a few minutes to check your voter registration, find your polling location, and learn what's actually on your ballot.

And if you're wondering why elections matter, think about something almost every American sees every week: the price of gas.

No president has a button in the White House that determines what you pay at the pump. Gas prices are heavily influenced by the global price of crude oil, supply and demand, refining, distribution, taxes, and what's happening around the world.

But the people we elect still make decisions that can affect those conditions.

Presidents and members of Congress make decisions about energy policy, sanctions, international relations, military involvement, domestic production, and how the United States responds when conflicts threaten global oil supplies.

And when wars and geopolitical conflicts disrupt oil-producing regions or threaten major shipping routes, global oil markets can react. When crude oil becomes more expensive, Americans can eventually feel that increase at the gas pump.

That's why elections aren't disconnected from your everyday expenses.

So regardless of who you support, November 3rd is Election Day.

Check your voter registration.

Know what's on your ballot.

Know where your candidates stand on energy, foreign policy, the economy, and the cost of living.

And then make your own decision at the ballot box.

November 3, 2026. Make sure you're registered to vote.

The Ed Sheeran and Macklemore controversy raises a much bigger question about celebrity, politics, and whether famous people are ever truly allowed to remain neutral.

After controversy surrounding political statements made by Macklemore during performances, he was removed from the U.S. portion of Ed Sheeran’s tour. Sheeran has said the decision wasn't personally his, explaining that pressure surrounding the shows ultimately led to Macklemore being removed from the lineup.

But the situation didn't end there. Other artists subsequently withdrew from the tour, turning what began as a controversy surrounding one performer into a much larger conversation about celebrity activism, free speech, political expression, the music industry, and the responsibilities placed on public figures.

And that's the part worth discussing.

Once you reach the level of celebrity of someone like Ed Sheeran or Macklemore, neutrality becomes increasingly difficult. People will ask where you stand. Fans will interpret your words—and your silence. Companies, venues, fellow artists, advocacy groups, and audiences can all place competing pressures on you.

Sometimes saying something is interpreted as choosing a side. Sometimes saying nothing is interpreted as choosing one too.

That doesn't mean celebrities have to speak about every issue. But it does mean fame comes with an uncomfortable reality: when millions of people are watching you, people are going to ask where you stand—and remaining completely outside the conversation may not always be possible.

The Ed Sheeran and Macklemore situation isn't only about two musicians. It's a case study in what happens when celebrity, politics, business, free expression, and public pressure collide.

There’s a heartbreaking true story behind “Desahucio” by Rubén Blades and Tite Curet Alonso—and it begins in Loíza, Puerto Rico.

On February 6, 1980, Adolfina Villanueva Osorio, a Black Puerto Rican mother of six, was defending the home where she lived with her family during an attempted eviction. Puerto Rican police arrived to enforce the eviction order, and the confrontation ended with Adolfina losing her life. She was only 34 years old.

Her story became a symbol in Puerto Rico of the struggle over housing, poverty, race, land ownership and the right to live with dignity.

Years later, legendary Puerto Rican composer Tite Curet Alonso and Panamanian salsa icon Rubén Blades turned her story into the song “Desahucio.” Recorded by Rubén Blades and Willie Colón for their 1995 album Tras la Tormenta, the song ensured that Adolfina's name—and what happened to her—would not simply disappear from Puerto Rican history.

This is what makes salsa so powerful. Behind some of the music we dance to are stories about Afro-Puerto Rican history, inequality, resistance and people demanding to be treated with dignity.

Before you listen to “Desahucio” again, remember the woman behind the song:

🇧🇷🇧🇷 Why do so many Brazilian songs sound like Black American R&B, soul, and funk? The answer is a fascinating story of music traveling across the African diaspora.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Black American artists like James Brown became enormously influential in Brazil. Brown’s music—and especially “Say It Loud – I’m Black and I’m Proud”—was more than entertainment. His sound and message of Black pride resonated with a generation of Afro-Brazilians confronting racism and developing new expressions of Black identity.

Brazilian artists and musicians absorbed influences from American soul, R&B, jazz, and funk, while combining them with Brazil’s own Afro-Brazilian musical traditions. Artists such as Tim Maia, Tony Tornado, Cassiano, and Hyldon helped create a distinctly Brazilian soul sound.

By the 1970s, the Black Rio movement brought thousands of young Afro-Brazilians together around soul and funk music, fashion, dancing, and Black pride.

And the influence traveled in both directions. Brazilian musicians had already been performing and recording in the United States, creating decades of musical exchange between Brazil and Black American music.

So when you hear a Brazilian singer hit an R&B-style run or a Brazilian record with a groove that reminds you of American soul, you're hearing part of a much bigger history.

Brazilian soul wasn't simply copying Black American music—it was a conversation across the African diaspora. 🇧🇷
