Why are there so many places called Guinea? And what does a British gold coin have to do with what Puerto Ricans call a banana? 🍌🌍
The answer is buried in centuries of exploration, trade, slavery, language, and European colonialism.
Today we have Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, and Papua New Guinea—but “Guinea” originally wasn't the name of one clearly defined modern country. The exact origin of the word is debated, but by the 1400s, Portuguese explorers were using Guiné as a broad geographical term for parts of West Africa. Over time, Europeans increasingly associated “Guinea” with West Africa, Black Africans, and products they believed came from or traveled through that region.
Colonialism helped spread the name.
There was French Guinea, which became the Republic of Guinea. Portuguese Guinea became Guinea-Bissau. Spanish Guinea eventually became Equatorial Guinea.
But Europeans carried the name much farther than Africa.

Beauford Delaney (December 30, 1901 – March 26, 1979) was an American modernist painter. He is remembered for his work with the Harlem Renaissance in the 1930s and 1940s, as well as his later works in abstract expressionism following his move to Paris in the 1950s. Beauford's younger brother, Joseph, was also a noted painter.

Luisa Capetillo was a Puerto Rican labor organizer, writer, journalist, and cigar factory reader. She organized workers in Puerto Rico, the Republic of Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and the United States. She also published four books in her lifetime, covering a wide variety of forms, genres, and topics. As an anarcha-feminist and social anarchist, she advocated for free love, universal education, women's rights, and collective ownership of scientific advances while opposing state control.
