"Holistic admissions" is one of those phrases families hear constantly—and one of the easiest to misunderstand.

It doesn't mean every part of an application carries equal weight.

A student's transcript still matters enormously. So does the rigor of the curriculum available to them. Testing may matter. Activities matter. Essays matter.

But admissions officers aren't simply assigning points to each piece and adding them up.

They're reading those pieces in relation to one another.

Does the course selection make sense given the student's interests and goals?

Do the activities reinforce something we see elsewhere—or reveal another dimension entirely?

Does the application help the reader understand not only what the student has done, but who this student is becoming?

That's what makes the process holistic.

Not that everything matters equally.

That everything is read together.

I wrote more about what holistic admissions actually means in this month's Flow Forward. Link in bio.

A memorable application doesn't require an extraordinary life story.

It requires clarity.

When the essay, activities, recommendations, and transcript all point toward the same student, admissions officers spend less time guessing and more time understanding.

One of the reasons application strategy matters is that admissions officers never read your application one section at a time.

By the time committee discussions begin, they're thinking about the whole picture.

Individual accomplishments matter.

The way they connect matters even more.

Parents sometimes assume admissions officers spend most of their time discussing a student's biggest accomplishment.

That wasn't my experience.

More often, we were asking whether the student's choices fit together. Did one decision naturally lead to the next? Did their interests deepen over time?

The strongest applications rarely depended on one extraordinary achievement. They showed a sequence that felt genuine.

One of the biggest misconceptions I see is that a polished application is automatically a compelling one.

Sometimes the writing is beautiful, the activities are impressive, and every piece is in place. But an admissions committee is still left trying to answer a much more important question:

Who is this student?

That question isn't answered by grades or awards alone. It emerges from the way a student's choices build over time.

I wrote more about this in this month's Flow Forward article, Why Polished Applications Still Fall Flat.

I hope it gives families a different way to think about the application process.

It's easy to fall into the language of winning.

Getting in. Beating the odds. Landing a spot.

But that's never been how I've thought about this work.

Admissions isn't simply about gaining admission to the most selective school possible. It's about helping a student find an environment where they'll be challenged, supported, and given room to grow.

Sometimes that's a highly selective university. Sometimes it isn't.

Success isn't determined by the name on a sweatshirt. It's measured by what a student does once they arrive.

That's why I spend far more time talking with families about fit than prestige. Because four meaningful years are worth far more than four impressive words on a bumper sticker.

Forward, honestly.

Every so often, someone around the admissions table would say,

"Now I understand this student."

Those moments were MEMORABLE.

Not because we'd uncovered another achievement. Because the application suddenly made sense.

The transcript.

The activities.

The essays.

The recommendations.

They weren't competing with one another. They were working together. That's one of the things I hope families understand early in this process.

The strongest applications don't impress because they're louder than everyone else's. They resonate because they tell one thoughtful, coherent story.

Clarity has a way of making people pay attention.

Somewhere along the way, admissions became a search for the most impressive student.

I don't think that's what most colleges are trying to do.

After years of reading applications, I've found myself asking a different question:

Is this student prepared to thrive here?

That's a very different conversation.

A student can be incredibly accomplished and still be a poor fit for a particular environment.

Another student may look less impressive on paper but be exceptionally well-prepared for the opportunities a university offers.

Readiness isn't about perfection.

It's about alignment.

When students choose courses that prepare them for their intended field, pursue interests with genuine curiosity, and challenge themselves thoughtfully over time, that readiness becomes visible.

Admissions isn't simply evaluating what a student has done.

It's trying to understand what they're prepared to do next.

Less noise. More strategy.

The first story is easy to see.

Grades.

Test scores.

Activities.

Awards.

Essays.

The second story is quieter.

It's told through choices.

Why this course instead of another?

Why did this interest continue to grow?

How did one experience naturally lead to the next?

One story tells us what a student accomplished.

The other tells us who they're becoming.

The strongest applications rarely succeeded because the first story was extraordinary.

They succeeded because both stories pointed in the same direction.

That's what made the application believable.

And memorable.

When families first reach out, they often tell me they want answers.

Should my child take this class?

Should they apply test optional?

Should we visit this school?

Those questions matter.

But over time, I've realized something.

Parents aren't really searching for certainty.

They're searching for confidence that they're making thoughtful decisions.

Those aren't the same thing.

Certainty is rarely available in admissions.

Every institution has different priorities. Every admissions cycle is different. There will always be variables we can't see.

Confidence comes from something else.

It comes from understanding the process well enough to know which decisions deserve your energy—and which don't.

That's where clarity begins.
