Using a students own voice is critical in writing an essay.
Admissions Officers Can Dectect AI.
“It’s important to remember that if you use an AI to help you write an essay, it's probably going to sound less like you and more like something quite generic,” he said. “And students need to know that for the people reading these essays, it won’t be too difficult for them to figure out who has used AI extensively. The key will be to use it to help students tell their own stories and to enhance what they want to convey, not to replace their own voice.” See link.

Student-Athletes:
It is time to start thinking about, (if you haven't started already) your brand.
Name, Image, Likeness
Student-athletes have the opportunity to receive compensation from third parties using their personal brand, often referred to as their name, image and likeness. The NCAA fully supports these opportunities for student-athletes across all three divisions.
To help student-athletes navigate the NIL environment, the NCAA introduced NCAA NIL Assist, a NIL platform in collaboration with Teamworks, to serve as a centralized source for student-athletes to understand and make informed decisions about NIL. NIL Assist will include educational resources, a directory of providers interested in working with student-athletes, and an aggregated and de-identified database of NIL information reported by Division I programs. NIL Assist will continue to be monitored and updated to ensure it meets the needs of student-athletes interested in pursuing NIL opportunities.
Beginning Aug. 1, 2024, Teamworks will:
Develop a process to collect disclosures of NIL activities.
Provide educational materials to student-athletes and those who assist student-athletes in their NIL endeavors.
Build and maintain a registry of agents and other professional service providers offering NIL services and publicize the availability of the interactive registry to student-athletes.
How do student-athletes benefit from NIL?
Athletes can benefit from NIL by endorsing products, signing sponsorship deals, engaging in commercial opportunities and monetizing their social media presence, among other avenues. .
What are the regulations surrounding NIL?
NCAA rules allow athletes to receive compensation for use of their NIL; however, NIL activities may not be used to compensate an athlete for athletics participation or achievement (i.e., pay-for-play). Regulations surrounding NIL also vary by jurisdiction and organization. Some state governments and schools have implemented rules allowing athletes to profit from their NIL, while others have restrictions or are in the process of developing policies
How do NIL rights affect student-athletes?
NIL rights empower college athletes to earn income from business ventures and personal brand while still in school. This can provide financial support, enhance their marketability and foster entrepreneurial opportunities.
As a student-athlete, how do I get started?
Student-athletes should talk with their school to see what its NIL policies are. A campus also can help explain state law and provide additional education, resources and information . Student-athletes are also encouraged to visit Teamworks to access the full suite of tools and information.
What are some examples of NIL activities?
Student-athletes have used their social media to endorse a brand or company, signed autographs, hosted camps or clinics and appeared in commercials for a product or company among many other opportunities that might be available in each student’s area.

The ACT is changing. Soon, the science section will be optional. Students will choose to take the ACT, the ACT plus science, the ACT plus writing, or the ACT plus science and writing.
While the SAT has gone all digital the ACT will continue to offer online or with paper and pencil.

UNC Chapel Hill posted their short answer questions for 2024-2025 college applications. Essentially, they are asking: who will you be on my campus? What sort of student will you be? Will you be in your dorm or the library the whole time, or will you be involved? Show me how.
Questions Posted by UNC Chapel Hill Admission Team:
Discuss one of your personal qualities and share a story, anecdote, or memory of how it helped you make a positive impact on a community. This could be your current community or another community you have engaged.
Discuss an academic topic that you’re excited to explore and learn more about in college. Why does this topic interest you? Topics could be a specific course of study, research interests, or any other area related to your academic experience in college.
College Application Summer June -Checklist
Complete worksheets in Naviance or Scoir.
Review your testing plan (PSAT, SAT, ACT, AP, TOEFL).
Register for testing dates. You can always cancel.
Create a study schedule.
Buy flashcards.
Put the flashcards on your desk, next to your bed, where you brush your teeth, in the car, at the dinner and coffee table.
Be sure to flip through some flashcards every day.
Work on your “colleges I am thinking about” list. Be sure to list a balance of reach, possible, and likely schools.
The college admissions landscape has drastically changed since the pandemic and is ever-shifting. There is no such thing as a “safety” school.
Work on your personal essay.
Visit colleges either virtually or in person. Consider a larger university, a small liberal arts college, a school in an urban setting, and one in a suburban or more rural area.
The more you can do between now and the end of the summer, the less panic you will feel.
Nearly twice as many students took the new digital SAT test over the weekend than in the previous testing date. You and your student can speculate if this was due to the recent announcement at Dartmouth and others to require test scores, or to the new test format.
Gently tell your student to study and help them recognize the way to differentiate from quantifiably similar peers is through the qualitative essay, supplements, and strategy.
UC Davis Med School: a note of caution. I understand the goal behind this school's diversity record. Bravo for trying something different over the last two decades and achieving success. However, the UC Davis Medical School model needs adjusting: penalizing kids of hard-working immigrant families who put themselves through medical school highlights the fact that the UC Davis model requires improvement in their algorithm.
