I often tell people to pick something that fits their hands well and that they can establish a full grip. But this is based on that they know how to grip a handgun properly. If your grip looks like the picture below. Or you put your support hand under your firing hand like you are holding a cup from the bottom.

You need more training.

The grip is the primary interface between shooter and handgun. The average person with no training has no idea how to build their grip (yes…it is an individual thing of what is optimal to your hands on a specific gun), and can dramatically improve simply by being properly taught to fix that. Most errors can be attributed to a grip that is deficient somewhere, while a proper one can overcome and compensate for a lot of other mistakes.

The problem is that people tend to have their priorities out of order. They go shop for a gun without educating themselves on what they need before doing so, making the process a lot harder. This idea of something “feeling better” is irrelevant when one lacks the frame of reference to understand what right feels like. It’s true that a gun might indeed fit your hands better, but are you measuring correctly? Not likely with no idea how to hold it.

The upside of learning before buying is getting people into training early. Let’s get the funnel feeding the right way to promote responsible gun ownership and make the experience more rewarding. I am available for personalized private lessons in the DFW metro area, and also open to traveling almost anywhere in the country if anyone wants to discuss hosting a class.
