The first African American woman to complete a surgery residency at MUSC has returned to join the MUSC Health vascular surgery team. Welcome back Dr. Sharee Wright! Quick story about Dr. Wright...

When she was a resident and found out she would have to buy loupes (special magnifying glasses) in her second year, she didn't know how she could ask her mother for the money. “She was a single mom and money was tight,” she said. During her final year, she and her fellow graduates asked that their graduation gift go towards loupes for the incoming PGY-2 class. Since then, the Curtis P. Artz MUSC Surgical Society has provided loupes to all second-year residents as away to ease the financial burden. Thank you Dr. Wright!

Dr. Artz's widow passed away on July 24, 2020.

”It’s not just the patient, just the individual receiving the kidney, they don’t live in a vacuum, so they are also involved in other people’s lives, so it really is a domino and a ripple effect, so by changing one person’s life, you’re changing a whole family potentially, you’re changing the course of history for an entire generation,” said Monica Lowe, the living donor nurse coordinator for MUSC.

Keith Smalls, MUSC Health Violence Intervention Client Advocate, has taken his heartbreaking life experiences and turned them into a force for good. He is the true definition of a Healthcare Hero.

Keith is the definition of a healthcare hero. As a member of the MUSC Health Turning the Tide Violence Intervention Program, he goes above and beyond to support patients and families that experience community gun violence.

As the first hospital violence intervention program in SC, Keith has helped make it successful in providing support to over 170 patients, hundreds of family members, and enrolling nearly 50 youth and young adults for long term wraparound services that are aimed to prevent violent injury recidivism and improve outcomes after injury.

He is devoted to his patients and families, and in extending violence prevention education and trauma-informed care with healthcare staff and trainees.

He defines what it is to bridge life experience and community understanding into the healthcare setting to address social determinants of health, and to demonstrate compassion and empathy to patients impacted by violence and inequity.

Keith Smalls has taken his heartbreaking life experiences and turned them into a force for good

“The penitentiary can either make you a better man or a better criminal. In that moment, I chose to be a better man." Keith Smalls

Read this inspiring story on one man's struggles, his triumphs and how - now - with his new job as a hospital violence prevention client advocate, he is changing the future for many young men who are victims of gun violence. In March, he spoke at the Charleston TEDx event, and earlier in April, he served as a keynote speaker for the 28th Annual Thomas A. Pitts Memorial Lectureship, which focuses on ethics in medicine – this year’s theme was gun violence and public health. And as long as people like Keith Smalls exist in this world, there will always be hope.
