In the library, Ms. Clark's scholars listened to the read aloud Balloons over Broadway: The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy's Parade. We discussed vocabulary in the book and used these two questions, 1) why did Tony’s dad not want him to have chores anymore and 2) why were live animals taken out of the parade, for close listening.
Scholars saw a video of a past Macy’s parade, then created their own parade of picture book characters by coloring buildings and creating a parade route at their table. We then put them all together!

This week the Mitchell Elementary staff have been in training to prepare for our first year of our Leader in Me journey!
Today we welcome back our amazing Reading Interventionists: Mrs. Herscher and Ms. Pohl!!
Ms. Pohl: This summer you can find me at the beach or by the pool with a book, catching up with friends, traveling to Colorado to hike my first 14er, and spending time in the Outerbanks with my family. This will be my second year as a Reading Interventionist at Mitchell Elementary, with previous experience as a Kindergarten and 1st Grade teacher. I can't wait to share my love of reading with our scholars again this year!
Mrs. Herscher: I grew up in New York and received my Master's degree in the teaching of reading from New York University. I taught 1st and 2nd grades in Brooklyn for several years before moving with my husband, my parents and my sister to sunny Charleston in 2004. I have been at Mitchell ever since and enjoy sharing my love of reading with my Mitchell Sharks. In my free time I enjoy reading, traveling, and spending time with my family.
This is a photo of my husband Ben and myself on our trip this summer to Budapest, Hungary.

I am a Charleston transplant from Kentucky. I've been teaching for 10 years and this will be my 3rd year teaching 2nd grade at Mitchell. I teach Math, Science and Social Studies to all 2nd graders. Over the summer I have been hanging out at the pool or beach with my daughters. My husband joins us in the evenings and we work around the house and yard as well as get in family time. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone in August and meeting lots of younger siblings that will be in my classes this year.
Mrs. Lopiano:
This is my 3rd year teaching ELA at Mitchell in 2nd grade! My husband & I moved down 3 years ago for him to attend dental school at MUSC! My summer will be spent laying on the beach, hanging out with family & friends, and spending time running & walking outside!
