The Student American Dental Hygienists’ Association was out in force at the RiverDogs game Aug. 16. Students manned an info table and Class President Olivia Buhmeyer threw the first pitch. The Charleston Clemente Course Project is offering a free course for low-income and disadvantaged adults. Students learn and participate in different topics and activities in humanities and arts as well as receive free books, materials and a meal.
Classes begin Tuesday, Aug. 22 and are located at Trident Technical College Downtown Palmer Campus. Support from mentors, classmates and faculty help students succeed. Many Clemente graduates move on to achieve their associate and bachelor’s degrees, obtain stable jobs and careers, and move out of shelters and into their own apartments.
With 65 Clemente Courses available throughout the world, Trident Tech currently provides the only Clemente Course in South Carolina, serving as the Southeast Center for Clemente.

Trident Tech hosted BOOMING in STEM camps for youth ages 7-17 in June and July. Campers studied forensics, flew drones, experimented with 3-D printing, built marble runs and much more.

Trident Technical College staff and faculty participated in the South Carolina 7 Expedition’s Cooper River Bridge hike July 24. Wellness Center Director Marianne Weinstein and her wellness students are pictured with Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg.
SC7 is a partnership between two South Carolina-based nonprofit organizations, Global Eco Adventures and the South Carolina National Heritage Corridor. Using the Palmetto Trail as the guiding pathway, the SC7 Expedition is a 30-day adventure across the state that highlights the seven geographic wonders unique to the Palmetto State. The purpose of SC7 is to get people outdoors and to highlight the state’s natural resources. The project also hopes to increase awareness of the need to protect these resources.

The Charleston Youth Apprenticeships program celebrated its 10th anniversary as 128 high school students officially signed on as youth apprentices with 53 companies. Apprentices, employers and funders were recognized at the bigger-than-ever Signing Day event July 25.

Horticulture Technology students give back by helping plan community gardens. Over the past few years Trident Tech students have designed a portion of the Medway Community Garden and a garden in Hampton Square near Palmer Campus.
This year, students are designing a children's discovery garden for the Charleston Parks Conservancy at the Corrine Jones Community Garden. This project is focused on bright colors and sensory plantings of touch, smell, sound and taste. Students visit the site and conduct interviews with the Conservancy and community (pictured). They will present designs at the end of semester and the Conservancy will use ideas from the student plans to install the garden.
Youth ages 7-17 are learning about science, technology, engineering and math in summer camps hosted by Trident Tech. The BOOMING in STEM camps are funded through a U.S. Department of Defense grant, National Defense Education Program for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education, Outreach and Workforce Initiative Programs. The program is designed to provide fun and educational experiences for the children of members of United States armed forces.
