Our Third Annual Alumni Art Exhibit was a success! My thanks to the 18 Citadel alumni who shared their drawings, paintings, and photographs in this pop-up show during Homecoming in the Moore Art Gallery. We also have an alumnus whose brother has work in our current "Opening the Gates" exhibition!

Missed out? Submit next year and get your art on view in our gorgeous gallery, too!

Homecoming was especially wonderful this year to see the class of 2014, who were the very first to graduate with the new Fine Arts minor. We started with 7 and will soon have 450 FA minors out in the world! Loved showing them the house they built by proving the concept way back when that art has a place here. So much love for all these students from all the years who came to say hello -- almost 500 people came through in 2 short days!

NOV 14-16: Register now for Stories of War at The Citadel, a 3-event NEA residency with Exit12 Dance that tells the story of the military through movement with a culminating debut of a Citadel-inspired dance on Saturday.

Free with registration - link in bio at storiesofwar.eventbrite.com
All events held in Capers Hall, free parking

THURS, Nov 14, 6-8 pm, Movement Workshop
Exit12’s movement workshops for those connected to the military help to foster expression, connection, and healing through movement. Partner and group exercises promote collaboration and trust-building, allowing participants to reflect and share their stories through movement. No experience in dance is needed.

FRI, Nov 15, 6-8 pm, Screening of After Action with Stacy Pearsall and Roman Baca
Hosted by veteran combat photojournalist Stacy Pearsall, After Action is a PBS series that reveals the experiences of veterans through candid conversations about what life is like before, during and after action. In the episode that will be screened at this event, Stacy interviewed Roman Baca, the Founding Director of Exit12 Dance Company, to explore how the arts can provide a form of expression for emotions that go beyond words. After the screening, Stacy and Roman will continue their conversation on stage together.

SAT, Nov 16, 6-8 pm, Performance with Debut Citadel Dance
Exit12 takes the audience through the military experience, exploring war, humanity, homecoming, and family. Over the past year, Citadel cadets and veteran students in the Fine Arts program have engaged with Exit12 to determine the common ground between dance and the military, including discipline, athleticism, and teamwork. They collaborated on a dance about the story of The Citadel, inspired by the distinct movements and sounds of cadet life, which will debut alongside Exit12’s signature repertoire.

Stories of War is funded in part by Creative Forces®: NEA Military Healing Arts Network, an initiative of the National Endowment in partnership with the U.S. Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs. Creative Forces Community Engagement Grant program is managed by Mid-America Arts Alliance.

Every October, non-contract senior Fine Arts minors can choose to spend their Class of 1979 Leadership Day with me and a few of Charleston's cultural leaders to discuss principled leadership in the profession.

We started our day with insights from President and CEO and a top-to-bottom house tour with Marketing Director as they set up for the epic Carmina Burana ballet on Friday.

Next, Director and Chief Curator gave us a tour of the exhibit (who just won the Prize) then walked through the gorgeous new Simons Center.

After an al fresco lunch from at we ended our day with a trip to the wildlife painting and sculpture in with President and CEO John Powell.

The collaborative nature of Charleston's creative community was evident as each leader, in their own way, discussed the intertwined missions and activities that require responsible, passionate, and ethical direction. Every day is different but the goal of increasing access through meaningful interactions is the same across all these outstanding organizations who have been terrific friends to The Citadel Fine Arts program for years.

Our sincere thanks to each of these leaders for connecting our classroom concepts to the art world and its many professional applications and opportunities!

Thanks to our friends at for a night out with Spike -- not our mascot but the living legend of filmmaking ! Cadets and vet students heard all kinds of stories from behind-the-scenes movie magic to his art collecting choices to his love of basketball. Sincerely appreciate the emphasis the Gibbes puts on providing access to the arts for all -- our Citadel group even got a shout out from the stage from Director Angela Mack!

Honored to serve as the opening keynote speaker for the 20th anniversary Roundtable Conference of the Southeastern Orchestra Volunteer Association with the overall theme of "Just Keep Swimming." My talk focused on the next wave of volunteerism -- how to connect in mutually meaningful ways with the Gen Z audience that I know and love! Excited to see how these energized community volunteers are working so diligently to increase access to the wonderful orchestral music happening all over the South. See below for contacts to get involved!

As the skies cleared, Parents Weekend brought hundreds of visitors to the Moore Art Gallery in Capers Hall. What an absolute joy to meet so many beaming families and to see our Fine Arts cadets (and my awesome minor alumni) proudly display their Bands of Gold. Special mention to Savanna and Huston Hall, two Fine Arts minors from the early days of the program who married and brought their adorable sons -- the next generation of art students, I hope!

Congratulations, cadets -- you've made another momentous step forward in your Citadel journey!

Let the senior selfies begin! My silly, sweet annual tradition to capture a last minute with the graduating Fine Arts minors who have put in so much creative effort during their time at The Citadel. This year, we have 57 graduates which brings our total up to 399 Fine Arts minors out in the world -- I couldn't be prouder of each and every one! Come back (like the grad in the last pic!) and keep me posted on your glorious life beyond the gates!

Artist Will Kiser of has been a neighbor to The Citadel for years and we were delighted to bring him into our classroom today! He answered all the cadets' questions about his screen printing process and then we showed him a different side of campus. Stay tuned for more news about our upcoming collaboration this fall!
