June is Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, highlighting the ongoing silent epidemic among men. Studies have found that men are almost four times more prone to commit su***de compared to women, but the former find it considerably harder to access professional help.
Why is that so?
- The Stereotype: Traditional societal pressure to “be a man” and deal with any issues silently.
- The Causes: Severe occupational stress, financial problems, and loneliness.
Countless men have been dealing with very deep-seated issues involving mental health issues. However, all of these struggles could lie dormant beneath the surface of normal behavior.
Reach out, join a support group, or call a crisis line if you think you may need help!

Have you ever assumed someone else would step in a situation to help so you shouldn’t? Bystander effect is where individuals are less likely to offer help when others are present. This happens due to fear to intervene, the believe someone else will do it, or judgement should they do an action incorrectly or make a mistake. Instead, don’t wait. Take action if you can. You could make all the difference.

Growth in psychology often happens just outside our comfort zones. Experiencesthat feel unfamiliar, like presenting research or asking questions during sessions, can help build confidence, communication skills, and a professional identity.
Academic conferences provide a space to explore new ideas, share perspectives, and engage with a community of scholars who are passionate about learning. As the SEPA Conference approaches, we encourage students to take advantage of these opportunities. Sometimes the most meaningful growth happens when we step into experiences that challenge us.

Academic conferences are more than just presentations. They are opportunities for learning, collaboration, and professional growth. Research in psychology suggests that engaging with new ideas, discussing research, and building professional networks can strengthen academic identity and confidence.
Conferences also create space to explore emerging research, ask questions, and connect with others who share similar interests.

Imposter Syndrome is the belief that your success isn’t earned and that being “found out” may be inevitable despite clear evidence of competence. It is common in academic and high achieving environments often reflecting internalizing self doubt rather than actual ability. Recognizing these feelings can help normalize them. Growth and uncertainty often go hand in hand. Keep your heads up as we head into midterms everyone!

Emotional Intelligence refers to the ability to recognize, understand, and manage our own emotions while also being aware of others’. EI reminds us that how we respond emotionally matters just as much as what we know. This is linked to stronger relationships, better communication, and improved academic and professional outcomes.

As the semester gains momentum, it is easy to be hard on yourself when things feel overwhelming. In psychology, self compassion involves responding to personal challenges with kindness, understanding, and patience rather than self criticism. Research shows that self-compassion
supports resilience, motivation, and emotional well-being, especially during periods of stress. Progress does not require perfection. Learning, growth, and balance are built through effort, rest, and self-kindness.
Conference Reminder!! With SEPA’s just two months away, start thinking about travel plans!!
