The South Carolina Office for Healthcare Workforce (SCOHW), a division of South Carolina AHEC, studies issues that affect the balance of supply and demand for different types of healthcare professionals across the state. During the last fiscal year, the SCOHW team published 10 new reports and data visualizations, presented at 8 national and state meetings and fulfilled 67 data requests.

South Carolina AHEC continuing education programs provide a local and low-cost approach to the education needed for health professionals to maintain their licensure and certifications and practice high-quality healthcare without having to travel far from their communities.
Last year, SC AHEC participants accrued 87,291 total contact hours of continuing education! π Additionally, of the 18,586 total registrations for continuing professional development programs, 73% were from professionals in medically underserved areas and 17% were from professionals in rural communities.

On April 21, 2026 our HPS Coordinators collaborated with the USC Lancaster Nursing Simulation Lab to facilitate another High-Fidelity Simulation session. A USC medical student and MUSC FNP student worked together to assess the simulated patient and create an interdisciplinary treatment plan for each of 3 patient encounters in this longitudinal case.

P*e Dee Area Health Education Center is seeking a Workforce Development Manager to support healthcare workforce strategy across our region.
The role focuses on building strong relationships with healthcare employers, gathering and analyzing workforce data, identifying pipeline gaps, and connecting stakeholders with the information they need to make data-driven decisions.
This is a hybrid position based in Florence, SC. The successful candidate must reside within commuting distance of the regional office and the geographic service area.

South Carolina AHEC Recruitment and Retention Programs provide financial incentives to healthcare professionals who practice in rural and medically underserved areas to improve the distribution of providers statewide. 150 health professionals were funded through these programs in FY25, including: 107 primary care providers, 26 dentists, and 17 behavioral health professionals.

South Carolina AHEC collaborates with all of the family medicine residency programs in South Carolina to enhance recruitment for family medicine, facilitate high-quality resident training and encourage collaboration amongst programs. Last year, 2,236 total hours of training were accrued by residents on on the AHEC Learning Portal.
