Jews who support groups lobbying for bans on the teaching of critical race theory, even at the university level, are advocating a policy that would forbid teaching about the Holocaust in German schools. (Perhaps a major financial supporter in Charleston SC of the NeoConfederate "American Heritage Association" who teaches adult education at Charleston's Synagogue Emanu-El and KKBE might give that some thought).

For those in Charleston (including Jewish supporters of the NeoConfederate American Heritage Association which opposes the teaching of slavery and Jim Crow in our schools) who spoke at the Charleston City Council against the creation of a Commission on Racial Conciliation let us be reminded of of how faithful Israel was in preserving their history. All of it. The good, the bad, and the horrid. They did this to teach their children so that future generations would not repeat their sins of the past.

If I were recording my own history, I’d be tempted to record only the victories and accomplishments, leaving out all my failures and mistakes, but this wouldn’t be truthful. Israel didn’t give into this temptation and it’s part of our sacred scriptures today.

The temptation regarding only preserving the history of our nation or that keeps them in the most inspiring and positive light is the temptation to preserve a mythic past rather than a truthful history. We need a truthful history precisely so that our children know exactly who we were, where we are now, and give them the adequate tools to truthfully navigate into the future without repeating our sins.
It is shameful that a member Charleston SC's Synagogue Emanu-El and Board Member of Reform Congregation Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim who teaches Jewish ethics and Bible is also a member of the Fort Sumter Camp of Sons of Confederate Veterans who continues to drive (or, worse yet, makes his Black houseman drive) his Jaguar through the streets of Charleston SC with a license plate that is so hurtful, offensive and demeaning: The NC state Division of Motor Vehicles says it will no longer issue or renew any license plates that contain the Confederate battle flag or any variation of it.
The DMV says it has determined that plates bearing the Confederate flag “have the potential to offend those who view them,” the agency said in a statement. “We have therefore concluded that display of the Confederate battle flag is inappropriate for display on specialty license plates, which remain property of the state.”
Yet he has no ethical issue with defending Trump's racism and insurrection. This is like keeping Kosher but driving around with a Sons of Confederate Veterans license plate.

"One of the lead defense lawyers for Mr. Trump has informed Senate leaders that he is an observant Jew who strictly adheres to the commandment against working on the Sabbath, and thus would be unable to participate in any proceeding that stretched past sundown on Friday or met on Saturday."

A World of Jewish Culture at Piccolo Spoleto has long been a staple of our public programming. Produced annually since 1998 in conjunction with Piccolo Spoleto Festival, a highlight of each year's festival is Yuriy Bekker's Spotlight Chamber concert featuring music by Jewish composers.

In lieu of his AWOJC 2020 performance, which would have taken place this past Sunday in the renovated sanctuary at Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim (KKBE) Reform Jewish Congregation of Charleston, Yuriy was eager to offer us a taste of what our audience had in store: the first movement of Bloch's Baal Shem suite.

Bravo, Yuriy, and thank you. Please share, and enjoy!

A World of Jewish Culture at Piccolo Spoleto began in 1998 as a public celebration of Israel’s fiftieth birthday. Held this year in conjunction with the Pearlstine/Lipov Center for Southern Jewish Culture’s Summer Institute for university educators, this year’s festival will focus on Southern Jewish music and film.

Charleston’s early Jewish history includes several significant American firsts: the first Hebrew Orphan Society, the first Hebrew Benevolent Society, the first Jew elected to public office, the first Temple sisterhood, the first sustained movement to reform Judaism in America, and the oldest surviving Jewish cemetery in the South.
