🎉Congratulations to the 26 newest Underwood-Smith Teaching Scholars! 🎉

On Friday evening, we celebrated an outstanding group of future educators who have earned the prestigious Underwood-Smith Teaching Scholars Program scholarship. The program provides up to $40,000 to West Virginia's top aspiring teachers, helping them pursue degrees in education while committing to teach in West Virginia's classrooms after graduation. 🎓

The impact is already being felt across West Virginia. Since the program was established in 2020, 35 Underwood-Smith Teaching Scholars are now teaching in West Virginia classrooms, inspiring the next generation of students. As the first cohort graduated in 2024, that number will continue to grow each year.

The 2027 cohort application opens Oct. 1, 2026.

🌟Graduates, we can't wait to see the difference you'll make for West Virginia's students! 🌟

If you're working in a skilled trade or currently in an apprenticeship, you may already be on your way to a college degree — tuition free.

Through the STAND (Skilled Trades Apprenticeship Nontraditional Degree) Program, your apprenticeship can count as college credit toward an associate degree. 👷‍♂️👷‍♀️

Pictured is Willis Hundley, the first graduate of the STAND Program from WVU Parkersburg. He is a member of the WV Laborers and plans to continue his education in the WVU-P Supervisory Management Program.

“Programs like STAND open doors for the working class who may not otherwise have the chance to pursue higher education while building their careers in construction,” Hunley said. "It definitely made it more financially secure. That was the big win for me, was the financial security. Being able to get an associate’s degree without all the out-of-pocket costs.”

Through the Learn & Earn program, Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) students Abigail Hannan and Bret Isner work at Davis Medical Center in Elkins, WV. Both graduated from Pierpont Community and Technical College

As MLTs, Abigail and Bret play a vital role at the medical center. They perform laboratory tests that help diagnose diseases every day.

"The Learn & Earn program made it possible for us to earn income while gaining background knowledge needed to be successful working in the laboratory environment."

Learn & Earn is a state-funded grant program designed to support paid internship opportunities for students attending a West Virginia Community and Technical College. The program provides funding to pay half a student intern’s wages while they are in school.
