In the second plane of development, children begin to look beyond themselves. They want to understand people, communities, nature, and the world they are becoming a part of. In Montessori, Going Out gives children the opportunity to take what they have learned in the classroom and experience it in the real world.

This week, our Elementary students spent three days and two nights on Tybee Island exploring coastal and marsh ecology. They walked through the marsh, studied periwinkle snails living among the spartina grass, held turtles and snakes, observed native birds, and learned about the habitats and ecosystems around them.

For children, these experiences become more than lessons. They become memories, connections, and a deeper sense of belonging to the world around them.

We want our students to leave us not only as capable learners, but as curious, compassionate people who notice, care for, and feel connected to the world they live in.

This is one of the beautiful gifts of Montessori education: giving children the freedom to step beyond the classroom, experience the world firsthand, and discover that they have a meaningful place within it.

Celebrating the International Day of Peace

Yesterday, we celebrated the International Day of Peace, led by our Elementary students. They introduced our school community to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and then guided us in Light a Candle for Peace. Afterward, we planted our Pinwheels for Peace across campus—a beautiful reminder that peace can take root and grow when we nurture it together

While we celebrated peace yesterday, we strive to live it every day. We are inspired by Dr. Maria Montessori’s vision of a more peaceful world and her belief in the power of children to help create it.

Together, we nurture kindness, respect, compassion, and a deep appreciation for one another—helping our children grow into the peaceful and loving humans we know they can be.

Today, we pause to reflect on the meaning of peace—not simply as the absence of conflict, but as something we help build through education, understanding, cooperation, and respect.

In our classrooms, children practice peace through everyday experiences: listening to one another, caring for the environment, solving problems together, welcoming differences, and contributing to their community. These small acts become the foundation for a more peaceful future.
May we continue to create environments where children feel safe, valued, capable, and connected—and where the work of peace is lived each day.

Friday Discoveries at CTM

Practical Life is where purposeful work becoms the foundation for life long learning.

In the Primary classroom, Practical Life activities meet the young child’s desire to use real materials in meaningful ways. From pouring and spooning to folding, polishing, washing, and caring for the environment, each activity invites children to participate in the life of their community.

As children work, they are developing far more than practical skills. They are strengthening:

• Focus and concentration
• The ability to follow a sequence of steps
• Hand and finger muscles
• Fine-motor skills
• Hand–eye coordination
• Control and precision of movement
• Independence and confidence

The carefully prepared materials are accessible, purposeful, and inviting. Children may repeat an activity many times—not because they are being asked to practice, but because they experience satisfaction in mastering the work.
