Saint John Vianney's feast day is celebrated on August 4th. He is the patron saint of Parish priests and confessors.

Born in 1786 in the small village of Dardilly, near Lyon, France, the saint grew up in the time of the French Revolution, marked by turmoil and upheaval. His parents were devout Catholics and instilled in him a strong and unwavering commitment to his religion from an early age. This foundation would later guide him in his vocation and shape his path toward the priesthood, ultimately leading him to become a beloved figure in the Church.

His deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary earned him the title “Mary’s Priest” or “Maria of Ars." One of his famed miracles was the ability to read the souls of his parishioners and offer them the perfect penance for their sins, often spending 12 to 16 hours daily hearing confessions.

The saint's life serves as a reminder that with determination, faith, and trust in God, one can overcome any obstacle and fulfill one’s calling with great love and humility.

Saint Martha's feast is celebrated on July 29. From her example, we are called to remember our primary vocation: love. We are not meant to become so overwhelmed by daily tasks that we neglect the very thing we were made for.

From her profession of faith, we learn that life in God allows us to experience wonders we could not have believed possible. The sister of Lazarus and Mary, she tended to the active life, busying herself and taking care of the household, an important part of life on earth.

Jesus reminds her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things; one thing is needful."

Even praiseworthy work can run the risk of obscuring the vital interior life. Jesus calls Martha, and us, to reflect on the importance of nourishing the spirit, to listen to the Word of God, for it is the Word of God that gives meaning to our daily activities.

We aren't all called to be prominent figures in the culture at large, but we all have a unique plan that God has put right before us.
