Perhaps Reality is Telling You Something
Today two great things happened. I received an academic journal in which one of my papers was published. And, I received a royalty check for my textbook. The first was gratifying, but the second puts food on the table. I was struck by the difference between the two. This kind of thing happened to me once before. I received an award from the president of our university on the same day that I received another check....

I am doing it. I am converting my blog to short-form. I have toyed with it for a long time, but I am now convinced. I may add longer blog posts periodically, but my intention is to provide bite-sized ideas (like Seth's blog). I really like the sentiments found in Jimmy Collins' post about brevity found here. Rush Limbaugh on Leadership
Rush Limbaugh died a few days ago and it is a sad time for Republicans who are still mourning a great loss. He was a lion of the conservative movement. For many years, especially before the internet, he WAS the other side of the argument in the media. The left controlled major TV news coverage. 100 Proverbs on Respectful Disagreement
After coming up empty after completing a search about the Proverbs’ instructions on respectful disagreement, I conducted my own review. The wise keep their mouth shut, weigh their answers carefully, and genuinely listen to others. Fools, on the other hand, are quick to lash out. They are hot-headed and quarrelsome. The Proverbs teach us to hold our tongues, avoid gossip, and speak with gentleness....

Raise Your Expectations… Especially During Difficult Times.
Sometimes we expect too little of people and then we find that our predictions prove to be true. George W. Bush’s phrase, “The soft bigotry of low expectations,” comes to mind. People will rise to the level of your expectations for them and if you free them to use their creative genius, their capacity to adapt and overcome is enormous. General Patton said, “Never tell people how to do things. [ 663 more words ]

This is Why You Didn’t Change
Last week I covered James Clear’s 4-step process to building a habit: cue, craving, response, and reward (from his excellent book, Atomic Habits: An Easy and Proven Way to Build Good Habits and Break Bad Ones). () As you recall, all habits begin with cues. Clear reminded his readers that cues affect us whether we are aware of them or not. [ 788 more words ]

4 Steps to Habit Formation
Last week, we began discussing James Clear’s excellent book, Atomic Habits: An Easy and Proven Way to Build Good Habits and Break Bad Ones. () We talked about three starting points for habit formation: 1) improving by 1% each day, 2) relying on systems rather than focusing on goals, and 3) focusing on identity rather than outcomes. Willpower (Part V)
In the last lesson, we learned that willpower works like a muscle. We found that if you exercise your willpower, you can make it grow. However, we also found that you can also exhaust your reserve of willpower if you are not careful. In this lesson on willpower, we will examine why we make poor decisions in relation to time. Specifically, we will try to understand why we don’t do things that we know we should do (procrastination) and why we do the very things that interfere with our long-term goals (self-sabotage). Willpower (Part IV)
In the last lesson, we talked about how we can increase our supply of willpower. I promised that in this lesson we would talk about how willpower works. We used to think that willpower was either an inborn trait or we believed that people of good character had willpower and people without good character did not. Some thought that you only had so much and then it would be gone; others thought that the more you used your willpower, the more you would have. [ 486 more words ]

Willpower (Part III)
In the last lesson, we talked about how willpower works. Specifically, we reviewed the difference between the fight-or-flight response and the pause-and-plan response.[1] What is interesting is that your body can tell you about your willpower, if you know how to listen. Lessons from the Storm
When I went to sleep on Friday, Hurricane Dorian was headed toward Florida. When I rose on Saturday morning, I found that the hurricane’s path to turned north. As I write, we are directly in the path of the storm. The storm is a good metaphor for things that happen at work that we can’t control. Is Life out of Balance?
We are all at different places in our lives. For some, school is just started. After the mad dash of collecting school supplies, we're now back into a routine of getting children to sleep on “school-nights,” getting them up at earlier hours, and making sure that they have completed their homework. Others have different concerns. A lady I work with is getting ready to have her first child. [ 793 more words ]

If you have been following the last 10 lessons, you know by now that in the early summer, I set out to a) learn what I could about productivity and b) become more organized. Summer, for a professor, is a natural pause in the rhythm of life. Stop Using a To-Do List
What I am about to say may sound like heresy to those who are looking to be more productive, but bear with me. I am a little ADD, so I have used to-do lists to stay on track since I was a teenager. Why More Activity Will Not Bring You Success
In our first lesson on productivity, we talked about identifying your definite major purpose (as Napoleon Hill described it).[1] If you have a definite major purpose, you know what you are trying to accomplish. As we begin this series on personal productivity, the logical place to start is with a discussion of focus. You don’t want to get more things done. You want to get the right things done.
