Meet Ariel Caligan, one of the professional photographers teaching with Next Level Photo Education!

Ariel is a portrait photographer, visual storyteller and lifelong artist with more than 15 years of experience. Her work includes portraiture, events, branding, documentary-style photography and photographic storytelling.

She holds a BFA in Photography from UNCG and also worked as a teaching assistant in the university’s darkroom and digital labs.

Ariel especially loves helping photographers find the story behind an image, while also bringing experience with Photoshop, Lightroom, color grading, light manipulation and historical photographic processes.

We’re excited to have her helping students explore both the technical and creative sides of photography this fall.

What actually happens after a camera takes a picture?

Elementary Photography 6 brings photography and technology together as students learn more about digital images, editing and the tools photographers use to turn an idea into a finished photograph.

Students get to make creative decisions while also learning more about the technology behind the images they see and create every day.

We can tell you what happens in our classes, but hearing it from the families who have taken them is even better.

We’ve had the chance to teach over 3500 photographers of all ages, and seeing students become more confident with both their cameras and their ideas is still one of our favorite parts.

Photography is one of the ways we learn what places and communities are really like.

In Elementary Photography 5, students combine photography with social studies as they explore communities, geography, culture, landmarks and the people and places around them.

They learn how photographs can document where we live and help us understand places beyond our own communities too.

For this photography class, the world outside becomes part of the lesson.

Elementary Photography 4 combines photography with science as students investigate light, weather and the natural world through their cameras.

Instead of only talking about what light does, students get to observe it, photograph it and see how changes in the environment affect their images.

Focus Academy uses photography as a way to learn more than photography.

Across our homeschool series, students use their cameras while working with English, math, science, social studies, art and technology. They might tell a story with photographs, look for geometry in composition, experiment with light, document a community or explore how digital images work.

The goal is meaningful academic learning through something kids can actually see, make and investigate.

Our elementary and middle school classes are 6 weeks!

Yes, photography can be math practice.

In Elementary Photography 3, students explore geometry through the camera while learning composition. They look for lines, shapes, patterns, symmetry, angles and other visual elements, then use them intentionally to build stronger photographs.

It’s hands-on math practice where the final result is a photograph they created themselves.

Photography involves a lot more problem solving than kids might realize.

In Elementary Photography 2, students work through creative photography challenges that encourage them to experiment, make decisions and find different solutions with the camera they already have.

Photography becomes a way to practice creative thinking instead of simply following directions to make one “correct” picture.
