Childhood Cancer Awareness Month highlights the lack of awareness from the general public, not from those directly affected. Families navigate complex treatment phases, long-term side effects, and life after treatment, often facing unseen challenges.

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is for those who *aren't* affected. For families in the trenches, awareness is a given. The real challenge lies in understanding the lifelong journey after treatment ends, managing long-term side effects, and the immense strain on single-parent caregivers. Resources are desperately needed.

Navigating a cancer journey can feel overwhelming, but education shouldn't add to the burden. Our founder Brett Wilson took complex medical curriculums and simplified them to make them easy to understand, deliberately removing the guilt, shame, and fear. By acting as a guide, she walks right alongside families and patients to provide shame-free support and navigation every step of the way.

Long-term survivorship comes with hidden challenges that many patients aren't prepared for. At age 40, our founder Brett Wilson became the youngest person at the Cleveland Clinic to have an aortic valve replaced due to late side effects. Because her mother kept meticulous calendars and notebooks tracking everything before hospital survivorship plans even existed, Brett understood the critical need for structured support. Today, we proudly provide services aligning with and exceeding standard care models to ensure families are never left in the dark.

We want to make sure families know how to access the help they need. Our support is available for children, adolescents, and young adults (ages 21 to 39). Eligible participants can live in Pittsburgh or the surrounding regional area provided they are treated in the city, or anywhere in rural West Virginia as long as they receive treatment in Morgantown, Charleston, or Huntington—and if they are referred elsewhere, we will support them wherever they go. Visit the Contact Us page on our website to see all program parameters and requirements!

When our founder and CEO, Brett Wilson, finished her second set of treatments at age 12, a nurse told her to "go be normal." Having spent eight years of her childhood in the hospital dealing with harsh treatments and bullying, returning to "normal" was impossible. That defining moment sparked a vision: to build an organization that ensures no family has to face these battles alone. In 2012, that vision became reality when she incorporated the Walking Miracles Family Foundation.
