Meeting Street Academy

Meeting Street Academy - Where hearts, minds and futures come together!

At Meeting Street Academy we believe in the power of a rigorous and inspiring educational experience to put young people from all economic backgrounds on the path to success. Our model of excellence is built upon academic challenge, development of character and partnership with family. We provide under-resourced families with a life-changing opportunity for their children to learn what it takes to succeed both inside and outside of the classroom.

Mission: Meeting Street Academy is empowering young people from under-resourced neighborhoods to become confident, productive and principled members of society through excellence in academics.

Wow! We can’t believe it’s that time of year again... We are so excited for our kids to break barriers, surpass goals, and show tons of grit! We will see you bright and early! #GrowthMindset #HardWork #85

We are so grateful for all the mothers of MSA! Have a beautiful and joyous day!

#ComeTeachWithUs

All of our core classrooms are staffed with two experienced teachers or an experienced lead teacher and a new-to-teaching fellow. With an average student to teacher ratio of 1:9 in our classrooms, all students get small group instruction in reading and in math every day. In this way, we maximize student success while building the talent pipeline. Learn how we define a culture of excellence in the classroom here: https://meetingstreetschools.org/culture/

JOY! LOVE! GREATNESS! We are grateful for everyone who came out to support our kids at the Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds concert last weekend.

We are honored to have been involved in the Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds concert this past weekend! Thank you to everyone who made this event possible and helped support our kids!

Words spoken by one of our 5th graders at last weekend's concert at Volvo Car Stadium ! Thank you Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds for an amazing show benefiting Meeting Street Schools!

Good evening!
My name is Aniyah Legare and I go to Meeting Street Academy in downtown Charleston, a gracious school full of teachers who LOVE their kids and kids who have respect for their teachers.
On behalf of all of us at Meeting Street Schools, I’d like to say a special THANK YOU to our supporters from those of us who will change the world because of your generosity.
I am able to do so many things that when I share with other adults, they are amazed at the work that I do. All because of my family support AND Meeting Street Schools. The money you spent tonight to attend this show will not only change my life but others because we’ll have more books to read, more trips to take, more things to learn about.
At Meeting Street I am able to do so many things that I may not have had the opportunity to do at other schools. I was able to speak at the Martin Luther King Jr 50th Anniversary of his assassination, I am a Straight A Student, I have performed at the Dock Street, I am able to go to my Dream School, I am able to tutor other kids bc I am learning their stuff and more. I am not just learning 5th grade material, but 6th, 7th, 8th and even 9th grade material. I am currently reading 4 books including Becoming, by Michelle Obama.
My teachers believe in me to be the best I can be. They PUSH me. My Grandmother, Antoinette Terry, always teaches me the value of knowledge. She taught me when I was very young the words of Condoleezza Rice: “Self esteem comes from achievements not lax standards and false praise.”
I am a living example of my ancestors’ dreams because I put in the hard work that is instilled in my from my family’s DNA.
I will continue to do amazing things because of the support of my family and my school community. At Meeting Street, we always DREAM BIG because for those who much is given, much is required.
Thanks again for being here. Let’s all enjoy the show!

Check out one of our amazing classrooms! 3rd Grade ROCKS!!

Classroom of the week featuring Meeting Street Academy: According to author Lisa Delpit, warm demanders are teachers who “expect a great deal of their students, convince them of their own brilliance, and help them to reach their potential in a disciplined and structured environment.” If you think back to your favorite teacher, s/he most likely held a super high bar for academics and behavior while also being your biggest champion. Ms. Jones and Mrs. Mailloux fit this textbook definition of the paradoxical term warm demanders. Make no mistake, though, their “structured environment” is still full of joy. You will see students who accurately completed their math sprints standing proudly on their chairs to celebrate this accomplishment. And, these eight and nine year-old students do not need to raise their hands to indicate that they want to speak; instead, they engage in conversations by speaking into the silence and jumping in and not over their classmates’ voices. This sets the stage for “adult discourse”, and it’s fun to hear teammates practicing habits of discussion by respectfully disagreeing or building onto each other’s thoughts. And, to make learning sticky, the teachers may don scuba diver gear to help students better understand Jacques Cousteau’s exploration of the sea or chanting and singing their multiplication facts to the tune of their favorite songs. Because of Mrs. Mailloux and Ms. Jones’ warmth and demand, our third graders are convinced of their own brilliance and are reaching their college-ready potential. - Thank you Katie Robinson for providing us with this wonderful testimonial.

This year, Meeting Street Schools (MSS) is partnering with Palmetto Community Action Partnership (PCAP) to put on a poverty simulator for all MSS team members and several of our community partners!

We are expecting a big turnout and seeking 60-70 committed volunteers and/or local organizations/businesses to participate with us as “service providers” so that our MSS team members can fully engage in the simulation and put themselves in the “shoes” of those living at or below the poverty line.

Please sign up to volunteer with us at the following link and thank you for supporting Meeting Street Schools!
