Register online at www.jamiedickenson.com Our mission is to make students success in both school and life! Jamie Dickenson, Certified Educational Planner, has helped over 2,500 families through the college selection, admissions, and financial aid processes. She works primarily from Charleston, West Virginia, but works with students from all around the United States by utilizing Skype, conference
calls, webinars and/or email. Jamie works with students individually in order to identify their strengths and interests, then uses her extensive knowledge of what undergraduate programs across the nation have to offer in order match students to the programs best suited for them. Ideally, students begin meeting with her as early as eighth grade in order to plan their high school course selection. Students must excel in the classes that will prepare them for a rigorous college curriculum. If a student’s grade drops below a B in any class, Jamie highly recommends that he or she meet with a tutor of choice, or she would be happy to make a referral. Students can also count on Jamie to help them through the standardized testing process. From twelve years of age, students must take an array of tests including the Explore (8th grade), PLAN (9th grade), PSAT (10th grade), SAT, ACT, and SAT Subject Tests. Depending on the courses students select, they may also need to take AP (Advanced Placement) exams as well as IB (International Baccalaureate) exams. Preparing for these tests as well as understanding the results can be difficult and time consuming. Jamie can help students and their families understand the nature and structure of the tests, share tips and strategies, as well as recommend classes and personal tutors for the SAT and ACT. Not only does Jamie get to know her students personally in order to identify their strengths and interests, but she also uses personality assessments and interest inventories to evaluate students’ natural gifts and match them to an occupation. If students are able to utilize their natural, inherent talents in both educational and professional settings, they will thrive academically, financially, emotionally, and spiritually. Jamie makes herself available to meet with students as often as they like. She does not limit her contract to a certain number of hours. During the sophomore and junior years, students typically select colleges and take campus tours. She encourages clients to work with her on creating the list of schools: students must consider not only admission requirements but also their ability to maintain the level of academic performance necessary to stay in the program. The cost of tuition as well as financial aid availability must be considered as well, as hefty college loans can lead to stress later on for students and their families. During the senior year, students apply for admission and financial aid. Jamie is happy to assist clients with the intimidating amount of paperwork each application involves, as well as complete the infamous F.A.F.S.A. (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and C.S.S./Financial Aid Profile if applicable. Each client gains access to the Family Connection by Naviance, online computer software that enables students to research and plan for the college admissions process. Not only does the software record and compare standardized test scores, track extra-curricular activities, and include a personal journal feature, it also provides access to specific college admissions criteria, scholarship lists and matching services, campus crime statistics, and information about different career tracks and average salaries. Jamie’s clients report feeling more informed, organized, and motivated, resulting in improvement in their grade point average (GPA) and standardized test scores. This boost can lead to acceptance to colleges or awarding of scholarships that otherwise may not have been available.
