A little story from my beauty industry days...
Back in 2019, I was invited to create a look for Magazine and had the opportunity to be in the magazine and potentially be featured on the cover.

The first time around, I created something based on what I thought they wanted.
I looked a previous covers and looked for the patterns of what styles they choose.
I focused more on being chosen than expressing my true artistry.

And while it was still a success and I was still featured in the magazine, something felt off.
A few years later, they invited me back.

This time, I told the colorist I was collaborating with:
“Last time I did what I thought they wanted. This time, I want to do what I freaking love.”

So I created a beautiful cascading pull-through braid with florals woven throughout the hair. It was bold. It was feminine. It was artistic. It was ME.
Did it make the cover?
No.
But for the first time, I didn’t care.
Because I was proud of what I created.

I wasn’t trying to fit into someone else’s box.
I wasn’t creating from fear of rejection.
I wasn’t performing to be chosen.
I was simply expressing my genius.
