WV Reading Camp Saint Johns Charleston

WV Reading Camp Saint Johns Charleston Reading Camp is an intensive remedial literacy education program that serves 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade children who are struggling with learning to read.

The formal literacy component of Reading Camp takes place each morning of camp where children receive over 15 hours of one-on-one or small group instruction in six focus areas. In the afternoon, the children enjoy traditional camp activities such as arts and crafts and field trips. Reading Camp is staffed by volunteers, including certified teachers, who are passionate about helping each child gain confidence in their reading skills.

It's time for photos from the rest of the presentation--first, each small group of campers recites one or two poems together ("Spoken Word"), followed by the whole group singing and moving to Hakuna Matata. Finally, we enjoy each other's company eating ice cream donated by Royce Caldwell from Baskin-Robbins! Today, we start the post of our final celebration. We end the week with a presentation for friends and family, followed by an ice cream social. Today's pictures are from the beginning of the presentation--getting into the sanctuary and introductions, followed by campers reading a story they had written during the week of camp. This was the culmination of lots of effort and required courage and poise from the campers who chose to do this. Great job, everyone!

Today's photos are from our field trip to the farm of Sarah Stevenson, local veterinarian, and her husband John Skaff, who happen to be members of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church. As you can see, campers got to meet an incredible number of different animals. When asked about their favorite thing about camp, for many this was it. Reading Camp 2024 Today we're adding photos that show our literacy centers and Minds in Motion exercises that help prepare brains for reading. Every morning, campers rotated through 6 centers, performing 2 or 3 exercises between each center. Centers included Phonics, Creative Writing, Comprehension, Spoken Word, Sight Words, and a great favorite--Pleasure Reading, a chance to sit down with any book, get comfy, and read! You will see some photos with Louie, a therapy dog from Bridgeview Elementary, who visited camp one morning. It's hard to see who is enjoying themselves more, the campers or Louie.

Reading Camp 2024 has now come and gone! It was a blast! We had such fun with our campers and staff, focusing on the theme of animals. Here are some photos to show you how we had fun while learning and practicing literacy skills.

We'll be posting a new set of photos each day for about a week to show some of the things we did during camp. These photos were taken by Margaret Lieberman, Jeannine Boothe, and Jo Blackwood. We're including all the photos we have because we know campers and parents like to look for themselves and friends.

For today's photos we focus on our gathering room "Room 109," where we met friends in the morning, ate breakfast and lunch, listened to our read-aloud story, and did crafts.

Why is Miss Margaret holding a gourd? She's excited about Reading Camp this summer, where the theme is "Follow the Drinking Gourd." The Drinking Gourd is another name for the Big Dipper, and people escaping slavery on the Underground Railroad learned to read the stars to find their way north.
