During my past three weeks in China, there have been two symposiums to discuss the publication of the translation of the Cambridge History of China, Volume 2: The Six Dynasties, 220-589 CE, which Albert Dien of Stanford University and I co-edited. One symposium was planned and sponsored by the Chinese Avademy of Social Sciences, China’s top think tank, and the other by the Social Sciences Press, which published the translation. On both occasions I gave a thirty-minute speech in Mandarin on how we organized the volume and its special features. Professor Dai Weihong who spearheaded the project talked about the care with which she selected the team of translators for this 1,000 page tome. Due to her incredible drive and organizational skills, she had the translation completed just four years after our book came out.
