For the thousands of students who’ve called it home, there’s no place quite like College Lodge.

This sentiment certainly holds true for Kristen Faretra Bowden ’95, who lived in College Lodge for four of her five years as a CofC student. That’s why she and her husband Greg created the 402 Scholarship (named after Kristen's old room number) in celebration of College Lodge. It is the College's first and only residential scholarship.

Residence Life is pleased to announce this year's 402 Scholarship recipient is TaDora Isaacs, a Marine Biology major at the College!

TaDora had the following to say about her decision to return to Lodge: "I have found from personal experience, along with the experiences of my friends who live in different dorms, that Lodge is more close-knit than other dorms. Our RA's reach out and are willing to hang out with us here at lodge, and that is valuable to me especially when I have my down days. Also, I have had plenty of pleasant interactions on the elevator including finding my roommate for next year. I chose the 6th floor again because of the stellar view of the sunset. I didn't notice last year because I was on the 4th floor, but if your room is high and on the left side of the building you can see a scenic view of the sunset and street that is very calming. It is the highlight of my day."

Congratulations, TaDora! We'll catch you on the 6th floor at sunset this Fall 🌞

We're still beaming with pride after this weekend's commencement! Residence Life is proud to offer each senior RA a maroon graduation cord designed with a strand of gold intertwined. This cord is an indicator of excellence specific to CofC ResLife that is placed around the students' neck to distinguish them as prestigious student leaders at graduation. The cord represents the honorable commitment our RAs make, particularly during their senior year, to not only serve as an around-the-clock resource for residential students, but also the large responsibility that comes with being an upperclassman leader within the residence life staff.

We also award our graduating desk assistants (DAs) with a commemorative pin to identify them as distinguished ResLife support staff. Our DAs are the glue that holds our first year communities together given their commitment to ensuring our students always have a knowledgeable and friendly resource at their front desk.

Congratulations, again, to the Class of 2021! We are proud to call you 🎓

We’re so proud of our graduating seniors! Being a Resident Assistant during any year is challenging and requires impeccable time management and leadership skills. This can be especially difficult during your senior year, when students are completing their degrees and making plans for their future careers. With a pandemic thrown in the mix, this year’s class has proven themselves as some of the most resilient leaders our department has ever seen. We are so thankful for our grads’ commitment to our residential communities this year and wish them the best of luck with all of their future endeavors.

We'd like to send out congratulations and thanks to Grayson Nix () for being selected as "RA of the month". Follow along in our IG stories today where Grayson is taking over our account to give a glimpse into a day in the life of a RA!

Grayson's nomination read:

"It is my pleasure to recommend Grayson Nix for the RA of the Month Award. Grayson has also been an educator for the new and returning RAs, who come to Grayson whenever in doubt. Grayson is always willing and eager to help, no matter if he is on-call, on-campus or no matter the circumstance- because he is just that person that goes out of their way to serve others. He has continuously helped staff grow into better professionals, better Resident Assistants as well as better individuals. Grayson always puts his heart and soul into our staff being the best version of themselves for our residents. Moreover, his technological skills have greatly impacted our community as he was able to fix all the electrics prior to having to call maintenance. Grayson has been always willing to come down to the desk in the middle of the night, just to help the Allied Safety officers with any technological discrepancies. Grayson, as a leader, has also helped multiple staff members in handling conflict with residents or amongst themselves. Grayson has been continuously using his experience and emotional intelligence to make sure that issues get resolved, and that the outcome is always positive for the entire team of McAlister Staff. Grayson has always been the one to submit everything on time, and ask about incoming deadlines ahead of time. He is also the one to remind the staff about the upcoming deadlines and make sure that they have everything that they need. Residents love Grayson, and in the form sent out they all voted for Grayson. Grayson deserves this award!"

Happy ! Residence Life employs over 90 student employees in an average year and we are so incredibly thankful to each and every one. We know that reslife work can be a thankless job, but it is arguably one the most important jobs on campus. Our student employees are the most capable workers with unparalleled leadership, time management, and administrative skills. Their creativity, empathy, and maturity are always front and center, no matter what may be going on in their personal lives. They have gone above and beyond this year to ensure our residence halls can operate safely during the pandemic and we are excited to celebrate them all week long! Help us say THANK YOU to our student staff by shouting out any RA/DA who made a positive impact on your residential experience in the comments below 👇

A veritable architectural museum without walls, Charleston is home to thousands of historic buildings designed in an array of period styles, including Colonial, Georgian, Regency, Federal, Adamesque, Classical Revival, Greek Revival, Italianate, Gothic Revival, and Queen Anne, as well as a number of others. The College’s campus is no different and we are proud to offer our students the opportunity to live on-campus in a variety of historic houses.

Historic houses are another type of “residence hall,” typically for upperclassmen who are looking for a unique community. Each house has a different history and layout. Some houses have full kitchens and shared living spaces along with shared, free laundry.

It’s no surprise historic houses were just voted the favorite on-campus housing option by students in our IG community tournament this week! Find out more about our historic houses at the link in our bio.

This week we re-opened several communal kitchens within our residence halls that were deemed safe for use by students in those residential communities. The following communal kitchens are now open: Berry (3rd floor kitchen), McAlister (1st floor lounge), College Lodge (1st floor laundry area), Rutledge Rivers (1st floor lounge), and McConnell (4th floor kitchen).

Safety remains our priority, so we are implementing the following rules and regulations for kitchen usage:
• Masks must be worn at ALL times when in the kitchen area.
• Students must return to their individual room/suite to remove their masks and eat their food
• Capacity limits must be followed as posted in your kitchen space.
• Kitchen use is only permitted between 7am and 8pm
• All students must bring their own pots/pans/utensils and dishwashing materials for use in the kitchen
• All surfaces must be wiped down before and after use with the provided sanitation supplies

We would like to acknowledge Residence Hall Association () for their advocacy regarding this initiative.

We hope that kitchen usage will further the sense of community and healthy living within our residence halls. Thank you for your patience as we have worked through the process of reopening these spaces safely.
