A message from The Citadel Legacy Giving: During the first month of 2022, it is an excellent time to think about preparing to file your 2021 income tax return. In IR-2022-3 the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) reminded taxpayers that they may wish to make a fourth quarterly tax payment prior to the deadline of Tuesday, January 18, 2022.

This week we are commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering which took place earlier this year! On September 26th, 1941, General Summerall issued a general order establishing the ECE department (attached) here at The Citadel.

To honor this significant moment in our history, we will be sharing the thoughts of one extraordinary professor, one groundbreaking student and one renowned alumni regarding this occasion and what it means!

Check back this week to see our three brief interviews!

If you need a suggestion for your next Book Club Daniel Library - The Citadel has you covered.

Dan Hawkins, Academic Technology Librarian, here with our book recommendation of the week.

I'm currently reading this for the 13th time, still one of my favorites and back in my yearly reread rotation. I recommended it here last year, and I'll paste a lightly edited version of that recommendation below:

Buechner's prose is never less than elegant, and he is often funny and profound. Of the dozen or so of his books I've read, this is the best expression of his skilled prose and among his funniest. It is also the best expression (for my money) of the tension between doubt and faith that is in the subtext of all his work. The narrator is the titular Saint Godric of Finchale reflecting on his life as he tells the story to the monk who will write his hagiography. Godric castigates the monk for all the ways he makes him seem perfect, and in his own telling there's a lot to regret. As he says, "nothing human's not a broth of false and true." One of my all time favorite books. I can't recommend it highly enough. Godric's narrative voice is one of the all time achievements in English language prose.

That last sentence seems a hyperbolic, but, at least for my taste, I'll stand by it.

September 20, 1922: The Citadel moved from its original location on Marion Square in downtown Charleston to it 100-acre new campus on the Ashley River adjacent to Hampton Park.

"Work on the new campus took about two years. The southern end of the Rhett Farm was cleared thoroughly enough that the campus was easily visible from the neighboring Hampton Park Terrace, and a hospital, quarters and an administration building were soon started. A row of sycamores was retained that had been planted as part of the park construction. The cadets moved on September 20, 1922, to begin the school year in the new home on the Ashley River." ~from A History of Charleston's Hampton Park by Kevin R. Eberle
