While visiting Chicago, The College Sage also toured DePaul University and got to meet their mascot, DIBS, which stands for Demon in a Blue Suit! Despite this humorous mascot, as one of the largest Catholic universities in the US, DePaul takes it commitment to community seriously. Its “Mission: Forward” global philanthropy campaign is central to the university’s purpose-driven education and community impact ethos. With its main campus located in Chicago’s leafy Lincoln Park neighborhood and a downtown campus in the city’s central business and financial district known as “The Loop,’
,” DePaul provides students with academics rooted in experiential learning. Students can receive a CTA pass for unlimited public transport allowing them to complete multiple internships (roughly 60% of students complete at least one) and to use the city as an extended classroom. Being on a quarter system instead of traditional semesters and offering academic credit for internships provides flexibility for scheduling. The College Sage was recently in Chicago and stopped by the University of Chicago for a tour. The campus is absolutely beautiful (one of our favorites) and has a park-like atmosphere that’s surprising since it’s located in the 3rd largest city in the US. Although not considered an “ivy,” this top-ranked university certainly has a lot of ivy-covered buildings! A major research powerhouse, UChicago is an excellent choice for driven students who are seeking a deeply intellectual education centered around a Core Curriculum featuring small, Socratic-method discussion seminars and a Great Books program. Its student life features quirky traditions, such as the UChicago Scav, considered the largest and most intense scavenger hunt in the world, and Kuvia, a winter festival that rouses students at 5 am in January to do calisthenics on the frozen shore of Lake Michigan. Home to many Nobel laureates and the birthplace of modern improv, UChicago provides a world-class academic experience in a world-class city! College Sage counselor Sue Woods is a beast! She’s over 200 miles into her 273 mile Long Trail journey in just 15 days! And what a surprise. We’re all-in on Vermont this week! Middlebury College is the quintessential New England Liberal Arts college, with a distinctive global twist. Acclaimed for its language programs, it offers intensive summer Language Schools in twelve languages, which were just wrapping up on the day counselor Sheila McGrory visited. It also operates its own extensive network of Study Abroad programs instead of relying on external third-party providers as many schools do. More than half the junior class studies abroad, integrating into the local community across more than 40 countries and 90 different universities.

With international students making up approximately 11% of the student body and representing 61 countries, Middlebury would be an excellent choice for students seeking a global perspective and a small college feel.

Middlebury is also well-known for its Literature and Creative Writing programs, including the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, which was also taking place when Sheila visited. Every August, it brings together celebrated and aspiring writers for ten days of workshops, lectures, and inspiration. (For the sake of transparency, College Sage counselor Sheila was on Bread Loaf’s Admissions Staff and attended for many years; she also taught in the English Department, so she may be a bit biased.)

Renowned too for the nation’s first undergraduate environmental studies program, Middlebury is a leader in campus sustainability initiatives. It also claims the first African American graduate from an American college: Alexander Twilight, Class of 1823.

Nestled in the Green Mountains of Vermont, Middlebury’s campus is picture perfect four seasons of the year, with a glimpse of those mountains always close at hand. The town of Middlebury oozes charm, and for those students wanting a more cosmopolitan weekend experience, Montreal and Boston are just a short car ride away.

College Sage is on the move! Pro Bono counselor Sue Woods Sue Woods is hiking 273 miles of The Long Trail all by herself! Fellow counselor Cindy Smithy Cindy Smithy joined her for a few miles one day early into her adventure. College Sage students are so fortunate to have these powerful and thoughtful women helping them with their college dreams. And we at The College Sage are so fortunate to have such a great team. Salve Regina University is one of those colleges where the setting is not simply a backdrop—it is a major part of the experience. Perched along Newport, Rhode Island’s Cliff Walk overlooking the Atlantic, Salve’s 80-acre campus was assembled from seven neighboring Gilded Age estates, creating an extraordinary collection of historic mansions, lawns, mature trees and ocean views. It is one of the most beautiful college campuses in the country and feels more like a grand New England estate than a conventional university.

Socially, Salve attracts students looking for a friendly, traditional and close-knit residential community rather than an enormous or intensely competitive university. Athletics are important, with 20 Division III varsity sports, but the overall atmosphere is generally more welcoming than party-driven. Newport adds another dimension: students can walk into a sophisticated coastal town filled with restaurants, beaches, sailing, history and year-round tourism.

Change. Change. Change.

More updates regarding the 2026-2027 application cycle have been released in the past month. The College Sage wanted to share this information as the Common App opened on August 1st and college application season has truly begun!

Vanderbilt will require ACT or SAT scores starting in the fall of 2029. For applicants applying in fall of 2026, 2027 and 2028, it is still test optional.

Tulane University announced their Campus Preview Day will be on Saturday October 10th. This is a great way for students to learn more about Tulane through tours and panels, and show demonstrated interest. If Tulane is a top choice, consider attending the event to learn more.

And finally, Georgetown is now on the Common App leaving the UCs as the main additional application platform outside of the Common App.

More schools have decided to remove their supplemental essays for the 2026-2027 application cycle. Georgia Tech, University of Vermont, and High Point University will no longer require a supplemental essay for admission. University of Georgia, University of North Carolina, Tulane University and University of Miami announced they were removing their supplement earlier this summer.
