Teaching is a hard job, but somebody's got to do it, right? Many people celebrated teachers this week and we would like to celebrate a few teachers too!

We will be giving away two gas cards to our randomly selected winner. To enter, just comment the subject/grade you teach in the comment and any other info about teaching that you'd like to share.

Anyone who teaches preschool/daycare all the way to college can enter. Winners will be announced on Sunday, May 8th. Good luck!
We are honored for the support that SBDC has provided since conception. Happy National Small Business Week!
Many times, we tell a child "sound it out" when they are trying to read, but did you know that isn't the only strategy to figure out a word.

Every letter in the alphabet doesn't have just one sound. In our language, the sounds can change based on the other letters in the words.

A few other strategies:
1) changing the vowel sound in the word (each vowel has multiple sounds. A and O actually has 3 sounds, unlike the other vowels, and Y has 3 vowel sounds)

2) chunking the word (find smaller words or sound parts in the words)

3) skipping the word (yes, skip the word in the sentence and then go back to the beginning and reread the sentence. Sometimes our brain can "magically" figure out the word that makes sense by using context clues)

4) checking the picture/illustrations for books with pictures (why? because the text and picture will always match and can provide clues on what the word may be)

5) making connections between words you know and words that are similar (in a more simpler reference if you can read the word "bat" then you can figure out other words with a similar spelling, like "cat, sat, hat")

Reading strategies are not always used in isolation. In fact, multiple strategies are used at once in order to figure out a word.

So the next time your reader is struggling, don't simply yell "sound it out," instead ask them what strategy do they think can be used to figure that word out.

Ask guiding questions like: Do you see any familiar parts/chunks in the word? Does it remind you of another word that you may know?
Adding nonfiction texts to your scholars reading list has many benefits. Reading nonfiction texts supports a child’s reading development, critical thinking skills, vocabulary and language skills, comprehension, and information-gathering skills. Readers also learn about nonfiction text features and their purpose.

Did you know that analyzing someone’s writing can give you a peak into their understanding of spelling and language structure?

Today, my first grader finished her narrative. This is a fantastic writing for this time of year and she had so much more she wanted to write, but I limited her to this one page.

As a tutor, it tells me what skills we still need to work on, like the other ways to spell “er,” commas after sequence words, and spelling the n sound as a vowel+n (she recognized it the second time she wrote Wherlin.)

The spacing and handwriting are superb. So proud of my tutee!

We love receiving reports from our clients. When the learner applies the skills and strategies learned from their session in school, there’s no way they will not see an increase in growth.

11/24/2022

We are thankful for each client and follower. Wishing you a very Happy Thanksgiving.

As we are about to start the new school year, be mindful of how you share info about your child.

THINK BEFORE YOU SHARE: Back to School Photos

Back to school photos are filling social media feeds everywhere, often revealing personal information about your child. This information - school name, classroom, grade, age, etc. - can all be used by predators, scammers, and other people looking to endanger your child, family, or finances.

No matter your privacy settings or friends list, its best to keep personal information on the internet to the bare minimum.

Don't share:
❌ School name
❌ Age
❌ Teacher's name and grade
❌ Identifying features (height, weight, etc.)
❌ Overly personal information (think items related to passwords or security question answers, etc.)

07/28/2022

Our website is NOW LIVE! We are expanding our presence on the internet to beyond social media. Tell a friend, refer a friend!

Timeline photos 07/28/2022

If you notice that your child is having difficulties learning, please say something. Bring it to the teacher's attention or hire a tutor to get them help. Do anything BUT wait!

07/06/2022

When you send a text message immediately after tutoring to let the parents know their child is doing good…..I definitely wasn’t expecting this response!

I’m so glad I’m able to help students build their confidence and love for reading!

✮ 🎀 𝐹𝑒𝒷𝓇𝓊𝒶𝓇𝓎 𝒾𝓈 𝓀𝓃♡𝓌𝓃 𝒶𝓈 𝓉𝒽𝑒 𝓂🏵𝓃𝓉𝒽 ♡𝒻 𝓁❀𝓋𝑒 🎀 ✮

We want to spread love. Adults have not been the only ones who have had to make adjustments since the pandemic started.

Our kids have had changes thrown at them too. Yet, they have remained vigilant and resilient. Let's spread love to them and let them know how proud we are of them.

You can shout out your scholar by writing a blurb about them, telling what/why you are proud of them by email. This doesn't have to be an academic shout out, let's face it-not everyone is an honor roll students and that's ok!

We will use a random generator to select 3 winners per week and share it on our page AND send them a treat.

˜”*°•. The Face Behind Epiphany Tutoring •°*”˜

Hello. My name is LaTosha Ficklin and I am the managing member/owner of Epiphany Tutoring Services, LLC. As the tutor, I bring you 10+ years of teaching experience. I obtained my Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from the College of Charleston and my Master’s Degree in Elementary Reading and Mathematics from Walden University.

I have seen first hand how education has changed over the years. Students are no longer required to learn what they did when I first began teaching in 2008. In fact, they are required to learn more. Due to a variety of reasons, including, but not limited to large class sizes, learning disabilities, emotional disabilities, and demotivation...oh and let’s not forget the current pandemic, you may find yourself needing help or support with the learner in your life. This is where I come in!

I offer a variety of services that can enrich, enlighten, and empower the Pre-K through 2nd grade learner in your life through tutoring. As a tutor, I focus on the learner’s individual academic needs and how to help them improve their skills in order to help them achieve their academic or personal learning goals.

As we face this time of uncertainty, don’t let your learner get behind or stagnant. Let me assist you with your learner needs!
