How Much Should You Pay for a Replacement Heifer?

With cattle prices at historical highs, few investments carry more weight for a cow-calf operation than the decision to add replacement females. A producer has several options: they can buy a bred heifer to add to their herd or retain and develop a heifer calf of their own, delaying her first calf by a year for a lower upfront cost. Current heifer prices have raised the financial tradeoffs of this decision, and the best strategy depends on assumptions that vary by operation and year.

Buying a heifer means paying today’s price to calve next spring. Raising means giving up what a calf could have sold for at weaning, covering a year of expenses, and waiting an extra year for her first calf. Higher heifer prices make buying more expensive up front but also increases the opportunity cost of holding a heifer calf back rather than selling her.

The Beef Cow and Heifer Investment Analysis tool was developed to help producers with this decision. The tool is a free online dashboard that allows producers to enter their own data, such as heifer price, annual cow costs, weaning weight, calf crop percentage, cull weight, discount rate, and cost inflation. The dashboard returns net present value (NPV), breakeven heifer price, payback period, and average annual net return, all of which update in real time (Figure 1).

Consider the dashboard’s default assumptions: a 92% weaning rate, 520-pound weaning weight, $1,100 in annual cow costs, an 8 percent discount rate, and an 8-year productive life, with calf prices and cost inflation following the USDA calf price forecast (users can also substitute their own price and cost expectations). Under these assumptions, the tool estimates the maximum price a producer could pay for a heifer while maintaining an 8 percent return ($5,018/hd in this case), as well as the payback period to recover the investment. Changing an assumption can significantly impact the outcome, highlighting how much this decision is operation specific.

The decision to buy or raise heifers boils down to cash-flow timing and the price paid relative to what a heifer returns over her productive life. The dashboard does not determine which strategy is correct for an operation. However, it provides cattle producers and other agricultural stakeholders with a framework to evaluate the trade-offs between these strategies. The Beef Cow and Heifer Investment Analysis Tool is completely free to use and can be accessed here on any device with an internet connection.

Cogongrass is one of the most invasive plants in the world. It is an aggressive, fast-growing grass species that has established throughout the state but is most dense in southern Mississippi.
Though cogongrass was introduced for soil stabilization and forage, animals tend to lose weight rather than gain weight when consuming it. It is a threat to timber stands and protected and endangered wildlife. Its litter is highly flammable, which can lead to wildfires in pastures, rights-of-way, forest stands, and other disturbed areas where it readily establishes and spreads.
How do I identify cogongrass?
Bright green leaves in spring and summer; straw-colored or silvery-tan leaves in late fall and winter.
Leaves are up to 6 feet long and 1 inch wide with serrated margins and off-center midribs, which can vary significantly.
Leaves arise from underground horizontal stems (rhizomes) that are white, segmented, and covered with reddish-brown scales. Rhizomes are very sharp, so be careful when handling cogongrass specimens.
Flowers are light maroon before opening, then whitish-silver, fluffy, and 2 to 8 inches long; seeds disperse long and short distances in fluffy, white clumps in the wind from late March to mid-June.
Leaf collar (ligule) may be hairy with overlapping leaf sheaths, giving a round appearance.
Plants do not arise from a dense clump, though there may be some thatch around the base.
How do I prevent or control cogongrass?
It is very difficult to prevent and control cogongrass since it's one of the most invasive plants in the world.
To prevent establishment, avoid soil disturbance, maintain native ground cover, clean equipment before it enters the site, and prevent the spread of contaminated soil.
Control may be achieved through a two-step process using glyphosate and imazapyr over several years. Since cogongrass likes fire, prescribed burning can stimulate its growth and spread.
What should I do if I find cogongrass?

Chiggers, also known as redbugs, are tiny mites that can cause significant discomfort during the warmer months in Mississippi.
Despite the myths, chiggers aren’t insects, and they definitely don’t burrow into your skin. These tiny critters are actually the larval stage of a mite called Trombicula alfreddugesi. You won’t see them without magnification—they’re about 1/150th of an inch and bright red. These microscopic creatures are most active in overgrown, grassy, or wooded areas.
Chiggers don’t bite in the usual sense. Instead, they attach to your skin and inject a digestive enzyme that breaks down skin cells. The itching is your body’s reaction to the enzymes.
The good news? You can avoid them with a few simple steps:
1. Keep your lawn tidy. Mow regularly and clear out brushy areas where chiggers like to hide.
2. Dress smart. If you’re heading into tall grass or wooded areas, wear long sleeves and long pants; be sure to tuck those pants into your socks. Yes, it’s a fashion crime—but it works.
3. Use bug spray. DEET-based repellants can be used on the skin, while permethrin-based sprays must only be used on clothing. Always follow the label directions when using these products.
4. Shower after being outdoors. A good scrub with soap and water within a few hours of being outside can wash away any hangers-on.
5. Wash your clothes. Toss your clothes straight into the washer and dryer, using the hottest water and heat cycle possible to kill any sneaky hitchhikers.
6. If you’ve already got the itch, the best thing you can do is not scratch. Scratching can lead to infection and make things worse.
7. If you are particularly sensitive to chiggers or have a severe case of bites, consult a physician.

Flower colors include white, pinks, reds and bicolors. The flowers are bright, beautiful and gaudy! The foliage color of hardy hibiscus can vary from light to medium green, with some selections even offering burgundy and dark-purple leaves.

How to estimate Corn Yield Prior To Harvest

There is a method you can estimate corn yield by thoroughly sampling random ears in a field. It will take some effort, knowledge and luck to represent a field, but it can help satisfy your desire regarding the upcoming harvest. The issue with any estimate is kernel weight cannot be measured prior to physiological maturity, because grain fill is still occurring. Accordingly this important yield component is not assessed. Thus, this procedure is often more of a learning exercise than anything else.

The first thing you need to do is to count the total number of ears in one thousandth of an acre. The length of row to count depends upon your row width as noted below:

Row length which equals 1/1000 acre:

17’5″ in 30″ rows
13’9″ in 38″ rows
13’1″ in 40″ rows

The next step is to calculate the average number of kernels per ear. You do this by counting the number of kernel rows around the ear, as well as the number of kernels in the length of the ear or kernels per row. The key to obtaining accurate estimates of kernel number is to truly collect random samples and collect enough ears to generate a good estimate. I strongly suggest closing your eyes while sampling ears, so you don’t bias your sample, because invariably you will pick large ears. Alternatively, you can pick 10 or 20 consecutive ears to measure. These values are multiplied to generate an estimate of number of kernels per acre and should be relatively accurate, if you do your part.

In order to estimate yield, you must also integrate kernel weight into the calculation. The problem with this method or any other variant for estimating corn yield prior to harvest, is that you aren’t collecting any physical data which measures kernel weight – limiting the accuracy. Accordingly, this method of yield estimation may get you in the ballpark, but leaves considerable opportunity for error which is not accounted for.

There are numerous factors that can influence corn grain fill and kernel weight, including any type of stress during late grain fill and hybrid genetics. Thus, you can expect considerable variation from year to year, depending on environmental conditions and crop management. Thus, it is best to use your judgement to characterize a reasonable value for kernel weight. The standard value historically used for estimating kernel weight is 0.01116. However, corn kernel weight can vary by 40% or more depending upon environmental conditions, hybrid and management. Thus, I suggest selecting a seed weight value between 0.0095 for stressed, dryland corn and 0.0135 for a healthy crop grown with irrigation or otherwise optimal growing conditions. These values are based upon seed weights measured from corn grown in Mississippi and correspond with 241g per 1000 kernels for 0.0095 and 343g per 1000 kernels for 0.0135. This value will have a dramatic effect on the accuracy of the estimate, so adjust your calculations accordingly.

The old saying “garbage in equals garbage out” is certainly appropriate for this yield estimation procedure. You must be willing to methodically collect representative data and apply your knowledge of crop conditions and hybrid characteristics to appraise kernel weight, in order to produce a reasonable estimate of corn yield. This means taking multiple measurements of plant population and sampling ten or preferably more ears for kernel number.

The formula for estimating corn yield is:

Yield (bu/a) = ( # of ears in 1/1000 acre)(avg. # of kernel rows/ear)(avg. # of kernels/row)(value for seed wt.)

Example:

(34 ears in 1/1000 acre)(15.5 kernel rows/ear)(38.0 kernels/row)(0.012 value for seed wt.) = 240 bu/a

Here’s how to pick out the best sweet and juicy watermelon:
The best way to find a ripe watermelon is by looking at its field spot. The field spot should be yellow- or cream-colored. It may even appear orangish in color! The bigger the spot, the better! This means the watermelon was ripe when it was harvested. If the spot is white or pale green, that means it was harvested too early.
The best watermelons are dull in color and heavy. If the exterior is shiny, that’s a good indicator the interior is not ripe yet. Remember, watermelons are made mostly of water! If you pick up a melon and it’s not heavy, put it back. The heavier the watermelon, the more water it’s made of. The more water, the juicer it will be!
You can also tap the underbelly and listen for a deep sound. Deep sounds indicate a ripe watermelon, while a hollow sound means it’s not ripe yet. This is not always a reliable indicator, as it’s more important to rely on its appearance.
