Friday was a fun-packed final day of our Arts Extravaganza! Darryl and Angela Stoneworth of DNA Baskets taught our students the history and craft of Lowcountry sweetgrass baskets. Kindergarten held their Under the Sea parade, reversing the usual parade route by having parents drive by and view the parade from their cars.

06/03/2021

Students are enjoying a wide variety of activities and projects related to the ARCA Arts Extravaganza. The visiting artists for the first week of June are Darryl & Angela Stoneworth from DNA Baskets, a husband and wife sweetgrass basket sewing duo and contemporary local artist, painter, and Mary Edna Fraser who specializes in batik on silk with an emphasis on earth, space and deep sea who collaborates with experts in planetary science, coastal geology, and oceanography.

Today our school enjoyed visiting artist, musician Charlton Singleton, who we invited as part of our ARCA Arts Extravaganza. He talked about the importance of both practice and discipline in order to get better at something whether it’s music or homework. The ARCA Arts Extravaganza is funded by an ABC Grant and the generous support of the ARCA PTA!

It’s Teacher Appreciation Week, and our SROs are highlighting some of our awesome educators.

Ms. Karen Elsey has been a kindergarten assistant at Ashley River Creative Arts Elementary School for 27 years. She has been paired with kindergarten teacher Ms. Heidi Blanton for the past 12 years. She enjoys teaching this age and watching them get prepared for the next 12 years of school. She also can be found at the kids' sporting events after school and on weekends, cheering them on. Ms. Elsey, we appreciate you!

This morning, Sheriff Kristin Graziano and Chief Deputy Joyce Smith stopped by to visit SRO Master Deputy Beth Auer and staff at Ashley River Creative Arts Elementary School. There, they had the honor of viewing this great art display that students created for Women's History Month in March. RBG, Rosa Parks, Temple Grandin, Mae Jemison, Marie Curie ... just some of the big names up there! Great work, students! #HERstory #WomensHistoryMonth Charleston County School District

[04/13/21]   Hello!

We are going to do a collaborative weaving project and need lots of fabric. Sheets, large fabric pieces and long dresses would be perfect. Any color. Even white would be great!! This project will be done by several grades so I need as much as I can get!!! Your child can leave them at the front office or bring them to my art room #418. Thank you in advance!!

Try the Book Fair eWallet

The Scholastic book fair starts Monday, April 12! It will be set up in the media center for students to view during their regular library time, but in keeping with CCSD’s health protocols, the fair will be socially distanced and contact free. Students will be able to view the books and fill out a wish list, but won’t be able to pick them up and browse them. This also means that purchasing books will happen a little differently. Here are some of the options for shopping the fair:

1. All our books are available online on our book fair homepage: https://www.scholastic.com/bf/arcae. The books will be shipped to your student’s classroom. To make it easier to shop at home, I posted photos of all the bookcases.

2. You can put money into an eWallet. If you return your student’s wish list with the eWallet option checked, we will gather the books and deliver them to their classroom. More info about setting up an eWallet can be found at: https://bit.ly/3g54owa

3. We will also accept wish lists with cash or checks attached (by Friday, 4/16), but per CCSD guidelines, this is not the preferred option.

Take a look at the photos of our books! If you have any questions, please contact Lee Grayson at [email protected] Thank you for supporting the library program at ARCAE!

Try the Book Fair eWallet Easy and secure, with contactless check-out, Book Fair eWallet is a win-win!

World Down Syndrome Day is coming up on March 21st.
People celebrate in a lot of ways but one fun and easy way is to wear your crazy socks!!

Why March 21st?

Down Syndrome is due to an extra copy of the 21st chromosome. This gives someone with DS three copies of this chromosome instead of the typical number of 2. Since there are three 21s, World Down Syndrome day is March 21st (3/21)!

Why Crazy socks?

This is for a few reasons...
When looking at a karyotype (a picture of our chromosomes, stained for viewing under a microscope), the chromosomes look like paired socks. The staining makes them look striped. Some folks even wear an extra sock to represent the extra chromosome. Another reason for wearing mismatched socks is to promote the celebration of differences. Some buddies wear the same set of mismatched socks to also point out that we are more alike than different. One last reason for the crazy socks is that they get attention. If someone notices the socks, they may ask about them and allow for a discussion about DS, differences, acceptance, and hope. Our siblings of those with DS seem to be the most into this day. They can show their love and support of their brother or sister and feel the support of others who join in with their socks. Plus, who doesn't have a pair of mismatched socks (some loads of laundry seem to lack a pair of matching ones!) so this is something in which everyone can easily participate. Heck, if you forget, you can swap a sock with a friend and bam!, you're in!

We are so fortunate and thankful to have Ms Williams as part of our faculty at Ashley River!

https://www.facebook.com/116447218391086/posts/3648902751812164/

Congratulations to Lisa Williams, Special Education Teacher at Ashley River Creative Arts Elementary School, this week's, "Unsung Educator of the Week".

"Mrs. Williams far exceeds the role of a special needs educator. Every day, she selflessly gives her time, love, and support to meet the needs of her diverse group of learners. Mrs. Williams is extremely knowledgeable in her field, making essential accommodations and adaptions to her lessons and activities to make sure each student feels included and celebrated. She works hard daily to establish a loving yet professional rapport with her students and their families. Her students adore and trust her.

Mrs. Williams is a natural team leader. She guides her teaching team effortlessly making sure each member is provided with the necessary tools to provide a well-rounded level of care and education to her students. Mrs. Williams challenges her students and staff to reach their full potential. She collaborates well with the crucial team of outside support staff (PT, OT, SP, and other services) to ensure her students receive services to provide them with numerous opportunities to reach their goals, improve on their strengths, and exceed their potentials. As a mother of three young sons, she still manages time to do home visits for her students as well as mentor student teachers and staff furthering their education."
