1D had a blast today! They found footprints, gold dust, coins, and shamrocks- all evidence that a sneaky leprechaun has visited the school. Students danced an Irish jig and celebrated with shamrock pie and lime and orange floats!
The leprechaun made his rounds today at Ashley River and he is still on the loose. He left a trail of glitter, gold, and happiness!

Congratulations to our 4th Grade teachers and students on a very successful My Furry Valentine fundraiser! 🐶🐱❤️ The total amount of funds raised was $552.90 and the amount of supplies donated was simply amazing. Kindergarten and First grade students are having fun making puppets and using them with Ms. Waldron's 3 mini recycled cardboard box puppet theaters in STEAM class. Our kindergarteners are making storybook characters and first grade students are making Underground Railroad themed ones bringing history to life.
Ashley River celebrated Read Across America Day with a Kindergarten parade, an author visit from the JustaChicken team (Preston Thorne and Langston Moore), and guest readers for every classroom!

Congratulations to our fifth graders who got a perfect score on their end-of-the-year state tests! George Suttle (math and science), Nolan Deden (science), and Sebastian Eddins (science).
This is what math can look like when integrated into STEAM! Fifth graders explored Shashibo cubes with Ms. Waldron and made an assortment of captivating and complex shape sculptures. Biomimicry is naturally a part of the lesson with students relating their sculptures to familiar objects in nature.

Calendars / Academic Calendar The Charleston County School District Board of Trustees, during their meeting on February 22, 2021, approved the 2021-2022 Academic Calendar. The new school year will begin for students on Wednesday, August 18, 2021, and will end for students on Thursday, June 2, 2022.
Congratulations to fifth grader, Shivam Kolwalkar! Shivam represented ARCA in the CCSD spelling bee and came in second place in the district. He was presented with a medal and trophy this morning. Shivam will continue on to the regional spelling bee in March.
Days 4 & 5 of Arts Advocacy Week highlights the past week of school at ARCAE. Our special area team, along with our guidance counselor, focused on encouraging our students to let their “kindness glow.” Teachers integrated topics focused on light and kindness across multiple art and content areas. Here is a peek at our kindergarten students in Dance class focusing cross arm movements and cascading objects. Thank you to these arts organizations for supporting the arts in schools: SC Arts Alliance, Arts in Basic Curriculum Project, and the South Carolina Arts Commission.
As part of Let Your Kindness Glow week, students in STEAM class created glow-in-the-dark UV light sensitive collages. Students also viewed clips and talked about how kindness can have a positive ripple effect.

Today is Day 2 of SC Arts Alliance Arts Advocacy Week! Here at Ashley River, the Winter Performance gives our students in 4th and 5th grade performing clubs, as well as our Suzuki strings students, a time to share their talent with peers and our community. This is just one of many opportunities for all of our students to showcase their learning for others.

5th Grade STEAM club members had fun unboxing the Shashibo math puzzles that Ms. Waldron got through a Toshiba STEM grant. These math cubes can morph into 70 different shapes and can be joined together through internal magnets. Math, Science and Art combine to help students see math as transformative art.
