Below are frequently asked questions and a response from Mrs. Conner. These are the plans as of now but may be tweaked as we get closer to returning to in-person classes. We will share more information as it is available. We appreciate your understanding as we work towards planning to restart safely for our students and staff.

CCSD will offer two options:
a) An in-person school that will begin Sept. 8 with actual in-person instruction (subject to a sustained downward reduction in COVID-19 infection rates) or temporary stay-at-home remote instruction if parents prefer to start the school year in remote mode;
b) The K-12 Virtual Academy, which entails a 9-week commitment for K-8 students and a semester commitment for high school students.
Below is a letter for ARCAE families with updates for the upcoming school year. This was also sent via e-mail, so be sure to check your inbox.

We are excited to share this year’s school-wide theme, Art Lights the Way!
In light of what has been happening in our society with the social injustices that have been committed against African Americans, we wanted to put together a statement from our school family, in support of our African American community.
We have also compiled a list of resources to use when discussing these recent events with your child. The link is below.
Today, we honored one of our very special teachers, Ms. Debby Menick. Debby is retiring after 30 YEARS at Ashley River. Our school has been positively influenced by Debby's calming, positive spirit. Her dedication to her students does not go unnoticed. We will miss you Ms. Menick! (Fun fact: Ms. Menick started in 1989 with Hurricane Hugo and is leaving us during a Pandemic! The memories!)
Congratulations to our 5th Grade graduates!
Enjoy our 2020 Virtual Art Show! Thank you to Mrs. O’Keefe for putting this slideshow together.

Thank you Deputy Watson! Your ARCAE family appreciates you!
The in-person school year ended so abruptly thanks to the coronavirus, and the 21 SROs at the Charleston County Sheriff's Office never got to say goodbye. So each deputy wanted to send all the students at their schools a quick message to say they miss you and want you to have a great summer. Be safe, everyone! And please be nice to your parents. #HappySummer

Spot the pip!
Oh boy (or girl), we have an overachiever on our hands. Can you spot the pip?!
Bantam Egg #1 🐣
Getting Ready for Hatch
Wow, where did the time go? This morning, at the end of incubation Day 18, the egg turner was carefully removed from the incubator and the 22 developing eggs were returned to lay on their sides. Now the chicks can start their final stage and get into hatch position. The incubator is on "lockdown" and will not be opened again until hatching is complete.
By Sunday, May 24th, (Incubation Day 21) we should start to see the first signs of hatching or a pip. A pip is a tiny hole in the shell and allows the chick to breath air for the first time. The pip can be hard to spot. After that, the chick will have even more work to do. Hatching can take up to 48 hours. Check out a timelapse of a hatching chick here.
Good luck, chicks! We are rooting for you!
We are so proud of our 5th graders. Almost 100 signs were delivered this afternoon to the most kind, talented, smart, and creative students. Congratulations!

Have you ever heard the saying, "Don't count your chickens before they hatch."? There is a good reason for it.
This afternoon (5/11) will be the start of Incubation Day 8 and things are starting to get very interesting inside of those shells. I will be candling the eggs tonight in search of shadows/ signs of development. Not every egg will develop or make it to hatch. Farmers consider a "good" hatch rate to be 50%. In class over the years, we have seen everything from 25% to 80% hatch.
We have 26 eggs in the incubator. Place your estimate/ best guess below as to how many will have signs of development/shadows tonight. The answer will be revealed Tuesday morning. Good luck!
