Lab Spotlight: Dr. Jessica Hartman’s Lab

What does CYP2E1 do beyond its well-known role in metabolizing drugs and environmental pollutants?

Dr. Hartman’s lab studies how this enzyme influences mitochondrial function, lipid and carbonyl metabolism, the liver-gut-brain axis, and responses to changes in diet and food availability. Using complementary research models, including cultured cells and C. elegans, the lab connects molecular mechanisms with whole-organism physiology.

Training is the most important part of the lab and for Dr. Hartman. Undergraduate, graduate, and staff researchers work together, with Dr. Hartman mentoring them as they build their skills and develop into increasingly independent scientists.

✨Spotlight on Yamuna Ravi, PhD student in the Jimenez-Sainz lab. ✨

Her research focuses on the cellular localization of a major DNA repair protein, BRCA2, and the consequences of cell signaling pathways by the altered localization of pathogenic variants of the protein.

When asked why she chose MUSC, she said, “I chose MUSC because of the collaborative nature that I experienced during the SURP program at MUSC and I wanted to continue my career development in a similar environment.”

From the lab to the world stage!

Kathryn Carter, a Ph.D. candidate in the Neuroscience Program, recently traveled to Italy to attend the International Conference on “Alcoholism and Stress: A Framework for Future Treatment Strategies.”

Alongside her mentor, Dr. Rinker, Kathryn shared her research with an international audience of scientists and trainees, contributing to important conversations about the future of alcohol use disorder research and treatment.

While abroad, Kathryn also took time to explore Italy with her family, making the experience both professionally rewarding and personally memorable!

Experiences like these highlight the opportunities available to MUSC graduate students to share their research, build global connections, and grow as future leaders in science.
