Celebrating the conclusion of our Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP)!

Last week, our SURP trainees wrapped up an incredible summer of research, learning, and professional growth. Over the past 10 weeks, students immersed themselves in laboratory research, courses and professional development opportunities while working alongside graduate student mentors.

After getting acclimated to the lab and learning new techniques and equipment, each trainee developed an independent research project and brought their work to life through an oral research presentation at the end of the program.

A huge thank you to our graduate mentors, faculty, instructors, and everyone who supported our SURP students along the way.

Meet Tyreek Jenkins, Ph.D. candidate in Dr. Lang’s lab in the department of Molecular & Cellular Biology & Pathobiology. When asked about how MUSC is shaping his education he said, “When I began my Ph.D. journey at MUSC, I hoped to become a stronger scientist, but I didn’t realize how profoundly the experience would shape me as a person. Studying age-related hearing loss has deepened my passion for research that can improve quality of life, while opportunities to mentor students and serve in graduate student leadership have strengthened my commitment to supporting others.

MUSC has provided me with the skills, confidence, and sense of purpose to pursue a career dedicated to scientific discovery, education, and service. I am grateful for the mentors, colleagues, and experiences that have prepared me to make a meaningful impact both in science and in the communities I serve.”

For many researchers, presenting at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology Annual Meeting is an accomplishment in itself. This year, Atiyabanu Nagingar, Ph.D., a postdoctoral scholar in Dr. Elizabeth Pearsall’s lab at MUSC Health Health Storm Eye Institute, took that achievement to a new level.

After being selected as one of just 40 competitors from several thousand contenders, Dr. Nagingar advanced to the poster competition finals—and then went on to win first place in the oral presentation round!

Over the past five weeks, talented students from GSSM spent their summer diving deep into research at The Medical University of South Carolina and where were matched with labs and faculty aligned with their interests, gaining hands-on training and invaluable experience. Yesterday, they officially presented the results of their hard work.

The College of Graduate Studies hosts this program, which is designed to provide early access to the lab environment, foster the essential skills needed for scientific inquiry, and ignite a lifelong passion for STEM. We are honored to support these students on their biomedical sciences journeys!






SummerResearch

Meet Dr. Lyndsay Young! Dr. Lyndsay Young is the president of the Postdoctoral Association at MUSC and a postdoctoral researcher in the MAD Lab, where she is mentored by Dr. Richard Drake.

Her research focuses on understanding how changes in glycan (sugar) patterns contribute to disease progression. Using mass spectrometry imaging techniques, Lyndsay studies sugar residues in tissues to reveal molecular changes associated with various diseases and cancers. These distinct glycan patterns can be developed into biomarkers, helping researchers detect disease and track its progression over time.
