In 2025, MUSC Facilities won a grant from the South Carolina Energy Office for energy efficiency and clean transportation. The $25,000 was allocated for two electric Utility Vehicles (eUTVs) for use by the Boiler Shop and Zone 2, the first electric vehicles put into service by these teams.
Purchasing these eUTVs rather than gas-powered versions is expected to save MUSC money and reduce pollutants. Financial savings are estimated to be about $2,250 a year and pay back after 12 years, and these estimates do not include potential savings from reduced maintenance. Energy savings are projected to be almost 67,000 kBTU per year, equivalent to the energy use of an average US home.
This project also will provide environmental benefits, including a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions of 2.4 metric tons per year. The campus will see a reduction in other airborne and noise pollutants, benefiting employees, students, patients and visitors.
Purchase and use of these will also serve as a case study to determine the benefits and costs of electric carts versus gas-powered models. Based on the results, we will determine the best options for our remaining nine (9) gas-powered UTVs as they need to be replaced.
MUSC Facilities appreciates the opportunity that the SCEO has given us through this grant, as well as the support their staff provided through the process.
