This happen been an interesting year to say the least, but today we wanted to honor our 2021 seniors. We didn’t have any shows but these students still are family to us! We want to celebrate their accomplishments! Congratulations seniors! Your futures are bright! Pictured is Julia Wall, Andrew Farrell, and Yuria Salone. We want to acknowledge Jules Kucklick, Emily Murrell, and Theo Purvis.

[01/26/21]   We would like to say how truly honored we are to know we have our community’s support. We are missing everyone, from the actors to set crew to our volunteers to our audience! We have been monitoring the COVID cases around us. Unfortunately things are not at a place where it would be safe to have a large gathering. This pains us, but we are wanting everyone to remain healthy. That being said we are not going to be able to do a spring production this year. We will be back, just not sure when we will be able to do it. We will definitely let you know when we have a green light to rock the stage again!

12/25/2020

We wanted to wish everyone a fantastic holiday! We had some friends who helped make a very special message for Ms. Stewart. Enjoy!

[11/26/20]   We want to wish everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving! We are so grateful for all the volunteers, actors/actresses, and set crew members we have had come to know through the many years! We are hoping that we will be able to once again put on another show for all to enjoy! Sending much love!

[10/04/20]   Hey friends! We hope everyone is doing well and keeping healthy. We wanted to give you an update on the possibility of doing a show. At the moment we are not going to do a fall show. We hope to do a spring show, but we will not have a decision made until, hopefully at the earliest, January. Please keep us in your thoughts! We are greatly missing all our actors and actresses!

07/27/2020

A little birdie told us that it’s our favorite director’s birthday today! Happy birthday, Mrs. Stewart! We all love you so much, and we hope you’re having the most wonderful day! 💕

[06/10/20]   Hi guys and dolls, as many of you may know, we’ve made the difficult decision to cancel our spring show.

That being said, we need your books! Ms. Stewart will be at her house tomorrow (June 10) and Thursday (June 11) from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. So, please plan to come by during one of those times to drop it off. Please be sure to erase ALL marks in your books prior to coming over!

We also still have some expenses incurred for this production, even though we were not able to perform it. If you did pay the fee, we're happy to return all or part of it to you. If you are willing to let us keep the fee, it would be very much appreciated! It will be considered a contribution to James Island Players and will definitely go toward paying our incurred costs. If you would like your fee refunded, that’s okay, too! Just let Ms. Stewart know when you drop off your book, and she'll return it to you then.

We love and miss you all, and we can’t wait to see you again soon! (We are still planning something for our wonderful seniors and other cast members, so please stay tuned for future announcements.) If you have any questions, please email Ms. Stewart or send us a message!

[04/28/20]   The screenplay version of The Sound of Music is on Great Performances (PBS). I missed the showing when it was scheduled last, so I’m watching it On Demand!! So far it’s superdeeduper! The nuns sang in Latin at rise!

Our History

For over thirty years, James Island Players has provided theater experiences for the students of James Island. This youth theater company was started as Fort Johnson Players performing two or three shows a year at Fort Johnson Middle School. Until 2017, we thrived at the middle school under the administration of three very supportive principals, and we were fortunate to perform on one of the last great stages in the Charleston County School District, albeit in a gymnasium.

When the decision was made to tear down the middle school, we had to find a new home. We renamed our theater group, became a 501(c)(3) non profit organization and relocated to the James Island Performing Arts Center in the Barry Goldsmith Theater at James Island Charter High School. We are supported by the faculty and administration of both Camp Road Middle School and James Island Charter High School. Our staff is made up entirely of adult volunteers, middle and high school students, and parents. In our new home, we enjoy the benefits of modern technology with fabulous sound, lights, and best of all, cushy seating. The cast is comprised of fifty to seventy-five middle and high school students. Backstage construction is student driven, as is the actual backstage crew. It takes many people of various skills to make two shows a year.

This theater company has impacted the lives of numerous young people over the years. Being part of a student-driven production such as this instills confidence, discipline and an appreciation for the fine arts. The sense of teamwork, camaraderie and being part of a large production provides lifelong skills and long-lasting friendships.
