REAL PANTHERS DON’T HAZE

Keeping with tradition, the brothers painted the EIU Spirit Rock. Hazing Prevention Week has a strong meaning in our chapter, with our fraternity nationally being founded on anti-hazing principles.

Hazing should not be a part of any chapter at EIU or nationally across Greek Life. Hazing does not promote a real brotherhood, and a brotherhood with hazing is not a real brotherhood.

Delta Chi was the first fraternity nationally to abolish hazing principles. And just short of a century later, the brothers of Delta Chi at Eastern Illinois promote and uphold the precedent that was established by our forefathers so long ago.

It is with heavy hearts we share the passing of our Brother John Edward Derwort. John was not only a brother, but a Founding Father of our chapter here at Eastern Illinois.

In 1967, John and other young men started something that would live on for generations after them. John didn’t only join a fraternity, he helped build one, and one that each of us in Eastern Illinois Delta Chi stand on every day.

A year later, John shipped off to serve in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. When he returned, two years later in 1970, he headed back to school and added a Biology degree to his first degree in History. He and his wife-to-be, Gail, got married in December of 1973.

That following year, he and Gail had graduated and moved to North Carolina. It was there they built a life, John even went on to spend 45 years as an environmental biologist for Duke Energy. And they welcome their son and two granddaughters.

It takes a truly special kind of man to leave a lasting mark on their country, the environment, and a brotherhood of young men he had not met yet. John was that kind of man, as well as a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather.

His legacy is preserved in our history, and in each one of us in Eastern Illinois Delta Chi. Thank you for everything, John. Please rest easy.

BROTHERHOOD HIKE

Last Friday, some of the brothers made a trip out to Fox Ridge State Park to go on a hike. It gave us a chance to make memories, share laughs, and enjoy the kind of moments that make this brotherhood special.

Our January Brother of the Month is Marquis Green! This past month, Marquis has devoted an immense amount to his committees, along with doing an amazing job as Recruitment Chairman.

Brother Jacob Henrichs added: “Marquis has been an excellent example of what it means to be a brother of Delta Chi.”

Thank you for all you do Brother! Keep it up!
