What is actually included in a comprehensive autism evaluation?

An autism evaluation should be more than a questionnaire or a brief conversation on a screen.

At Family Priority Evaluations, I take the time to get to know the whole child. A comprehensive autism evaluation may include:

• A detailed developmental and family history
• Parent/caregiver interviews
• Review of school, medical, and previous evaluation records
• Information from teachers or other providers, when appropriate
• Assessment of cognitive and/or developmental functioning
• Evaluation of adaptive skills and everyday functioning
• Autism-specific rating scales
• Assessment of social communication and interaction
• Direct, in-person observation and assessment, including the ADOS-2 when appropriate
• Consideration of other factors such as ADHD, anxiety, learning differences, or emotional concerns

Why does in-person time matter?

Some of the most important information isn't found on a rating scale.

Spending time with a child in person allows me to observe how they initiate and respond to conversation, use and understand nonverbal communication, engage socially, approach play or imaginative activities, respond to changes in interaction, and navigate the natural back-and-forth of being with another person.

This can be especially important for children and teens whose autism characteristics are more subtle or who have learned ways to compensate in everyday situations.

The goal isn't simply to determine whether a child meets criteria for autism. It's to develop a thorough understanding of their individual strengths, challenges, and support needs so families leave with meaningful answers and recommendations.

📚 Could It Be Dyslexia?

Sometimes a child’s grades look “okay,” but reading and schoolwork are much harder than they should be.

Signs of dyslexia or a reading-based learning difficulty may include:

• Reading slowly or needing extra time
• Difficulty sounding out unfamiliar words
• Guessing at words instead of reading them accurately
• Avoiding reading aloud
• Trouble with spelling, even after practicing
• Difficulty remembering or applying phonics rules
• Becoming frustrated, overwhelmed, or upset during homework
• Taking much longer than expected to complete reading assignments
• Understanding a story when it is read aloud, but struggling when reading it independently
• Saying they “hate reading” or trying to avoid reading whenever possible

And importantly, a child does not have to be failing to have dyslexia. Some students work incredibly hard, use their strengths to compensate, and maintain average or even good grades while still struggling with an underlying reading disability.

A comprehensive learning evaluation can help identify why reading is difficult and determine whether dyslexia or another learning difference may be contributing.

Could it be autism? Sometimes the signs become clearer during the teen years.

Not every autistic child is identified in early childhood. For some teens, differences become more noticeable as friendships get more complicated, expectations for independence increase, and school becomes more demanding.

Parents may notice things like:

Difficulty making or maintaining friendships
Feeling confused by social situations or unwritten social rules
Becoming overwhelmed or exhausted after school or social activities
Intense or highly focused interests
Sensory sensitivities
Difficulty with changes in plans or routines
Anxiety surrounding school, friendships, or new situations

📚 What is a Section 504 Plan?

Many parents have heard of a Section 504 Plan, but aren't always sure who qualifies or what kinds of supports it can provide.

A Section 504 Plan provides accommodations that help students with disabilities access their education and participate fully in the school environment. Accommodations are individualized based on the student's unique needs.

Students may qualify for a 504 Plan for a variety of conditions, including:
✔️ ADHD
✔️ Anxiety disorders
✔️ Depression
✔️ Dyslexia and other learning disabilities
✔️ Autism Spectrum Disorder
✔️ Diabetes
✔️ Epilepsy
✔️ Migraines
✔️ Hearing or vision impairments
✔️ Physical disabilities
✔️ Concussion recovery
✔️ Chronic medical conditions (such as Crohn's disease, juvenile arthritis, or cystic fibrosis)..and many others.

Examples of accommodations may include:
📖 Extended time on assignments or tests

🍎 Helping Children with School Anxiety Transition Back to School

As summer comes to an end, it's normal for children to feel a little nervous about returning to school. For some children, however, those worries become much bigger than typical first-day jitters.

Here are a few ways to help make the return to school a little easier:

• Start adjusting bedtime and morning routines several days before school begins.

• Talk positively about the new school year while encouraging your child to share any worries they may have.

• Practice the school routine by driving to the school, walking to the classroom, or packing their backpack together.

• Validate their feelings. Instead of saying, "Don't worry," try saying, "I know this feels hard. We'll work through it together."

• Practice coping skills like deep breathing, positive self-talk, or identifying a trusted adult at school they can go to if they're feeling overwhelmed.

• Keep drop-offs calm, confident, and consistent. Children often take their emotional cues from the adults around them.

Remember, some nervousness is completely normal. But if your child's anxiety is persistent, leads to frequent stomachaches or headaches, causes significant distress, or makes attending school difficult, additional support may be helpful.

Starting the school year with the right supports can make a meaningful difference in a child's confidence and success.

☀️ As Summer Begins to Wind Down...

It's hard to believe we're already nearing the end of summer. Before backpacks are packed and schedules fill up, take a moment to think about how last school year went.

Did your child...

It’s not refusal. It’s the nervous system protecting itself.

Children experiencing demand‑related anxiety may show meltdowns, shutdowns, physical discomfort, increased stimming, or sudden withdrawal. These behaviours are communication early warning signs that their system is struggling, not misbehaving.

There are moments where an ordinary request to James can trigger a reaction that looks completely out of proportion to what was asked. It never has been about him refusing. It's not refusal. It's the nervous system protecting itself.

Supporting these children means reducing pressure, offering choices, slowing the pace, and creating predictable, low‑demand environments. Calm tone, time to process, and flexible expectations help their nervous system return to safety so learning and connection can happen again.

Understanding the why behind the behaviour transforms how we respond.
Connection first. Regulation next. Progress follows.

It can look very different depending on the moment, meltdowns with explosive emotions, avoidance through running or hiding, shutdowns where a child goes quiet or unresponsive, physical responses like headaches or stomach aches, repetitive behaviours like stimming or rocking increasing, aggression as a form of expressing overwhelm, or refusal, saying no or simply being unable to start.

For parent carers, what helps is reducing demands and simplifying language, offering choices and control where possible, giving advance warning before transitions, using a calm respectful tone, following their lead to build trust, and allowing time to process before expecting a response. Connection first. Compliance second.

What to avoid is too many instructions at once, rushing or pressuring a response, using threats, rewards or consequences, comparing them to others, ignoring stress signals, forcing eye contact or interaction, expecting them to "just try harder," or punishing behaviour that anxiety actually caused.

For professionals and educators, their behaviour is information, not defiance. What helps the nervous system is safety, predictability, time, acceptance, and flexibility. What hurts it is pressure, uncertainty, criticism, punishment, and overload.
