The Academy at Charlemont We are a public-spirited private day school in the hills of Western Massachusetts.

We offer a classical education in a progressive environment, sustained by a strong community. The Academy believes that the academic, liberal arts tradition is a challenging, intellectually stimulating ground on which young people can both learn to use their minds well, and furnish those minds with the kind of broad, basic knowledge needed to succeed in college and as citizens of the world. We bel

ieve in emphasizing connections among the academic disciplines because "real world" challenges require citizens to think beyond the discrete boundaries of academic disciplines, to look at things from many different angles. We believe that a school community based on values- self-reliance, industry, integrity, and compassion - encourages development of intellectual and social standards that reflect those values. We believe that affirming the uniqueness of each individual and at the same time insisting that individuals subscribe to a set of commonly held standards - civility, respect, concern for others - produces a healthy tension that helps students learn, grow, and become productive citizens. We’ll not be able to capture the unique spirit, vitality, and humor of Academy life on this website. When you come to visit you’ll immediately be struck by the physical beauty of our rural setting, the friendliness and civility of our community, the amount of laughter one hears, and the respect for learning one observes. In and of its place, The Academy’s school meeting is modeled on the New England town meeting, a democratic institution where each citizen is encouraged to find their voice and speak their mind.

It is with great sadness that we share the news already circulating through some Academy grapevines: the passing of long-time faculty member, Stephen “Morgo” Morganelli. Stephen Morganelli taught math and science at The Academy from 1982 until 1997, and had an indelible impact on countless students and colleagues. His talent and character as a teacher was the kind of energy that every educator longs to harness and embody: maintaining high academic standards, delivered with the kind of joy and aplomb that students found irresistible. A real light, Morgo drew others in and held them with the kind of careful, individualized attention and true knowing that we have always endeavored to cultivate at The Academy. He brought this same loving stewardship to other areas of the school, including the school store and, perhaps most importantly, given our long-standing tradition of building community through food, the Honey Bear Hut. Shares Co-Head of School Nora Bates Zale ՚00, “Perhaps it had always been thus, but I especially remember the way Morgo supported high school students in taking on ownership of the school lunch program, assisting in menu planning and even food shopping, and certainly in caretaking of the kitchen. It was yet another shining example of how he could run a tight ship, yet also infuse it with glee and camaraderie. I remember how heartbroken we all were when he left the school, yet his legacy lives on today.”
