You: Let’s talk about this picture. What do you see in the picture?
Student: I see a man and a horse. I see people in the back sitting on steps.
Other people in the back are standing up. I also see a car behind the horse.
You: Okay. Let’s talk about the man. Tell me about him.
Student: He has long hair, and he is wearing a cowboy hat.
You: Why is he wearing a cowboy hat?
Student: Because he’s a cowboy.
You: What makes you think that he’s a cowboy?
Student: Because he’s wearing a cowboy hat and standing next to his horse.
You: Let’s talk about the horse. What can you tell me about the horse?
Student: It’s a big horse.
You: Yes, it’s big. What else can you tell me about the horse?
Student: It’s brown and has light-colored hair. And it’s wearing a bunch of stuff.
You: Yes, it’s wearing some things. Why do you think that it is wearing those
things?
Student: Those are things that the cowboy needs. They used horses to carry
their stuff.
You: Okay. Let’s talk about the people in the back. You said that some are on
the steps.
Student: They’re sitting on the steps watching the cowboy and his horse.
You: Why are they watching the cowboy and his horse?
Student: Because they’re at a rodeo, and he’s doing tricks.
You: Is he very good at doing tricks?
Student: Well, not many people are watching him.
You: What does that tell you?
Student: If he was good, there would be more people watching him. Some of
the people who are standing back there aren’t even looking.
You: Where does this take place?

What is most distracting for you when you are trying to concentrate?

For a visual learner, it would be visual distractions.

For an auditory learner, it would be other noises.

For a tactile-kinesthetic learner, it would be other sensations, like hunger,
tight shoes, or worry.

When solving a problem …

A visual learner will make a list, organize the steps, and check them off as
he is done.

An auditory learner will make a few phone calls and talk to friends or ex-
perts.

A tactile-kinesthetic learner will make a model of the problem.

When studying for a test …

A visual learner will read notes, read headings in a book, and look at dia-
grams and illustrations.

An auditory learner will have someone ask him questions or repeat facts
(silently or aloud) to himself.

A tactile-kinesthetic learner will write things out on index cards and make
models.

There has been a lot of research done on the benefit of intervention with struggling
readers. Three of the studies are summarized below.

• Torgesen (1997) identified children in kindergarten based on poor
phonological awareness. By grade 2, one-on-one tutoring brought 75% to
grade level reading.

• Vellutino et al. (1996) identified middle SES children with very low word
recognition skills at the beginning of grade 1. After 1 semester of one-on-
one tutoring, 70% were on grade level. (SES—Socioeconomic Status)

• Foorman et al. (1998) found that classroom level reading intervention
that provided explicit instruction in phonological awareness and the alpha-
betic principle as part of a balanced approach to reading brought grade 1
and grade 2 students receiving Title 1 services to national averages relative
to less explicit, inductive approaches. (Inductive—a modern theory of
teaching grammar in which the rules are taught in context or in a practical
situation)
