One of the nice things about my profession is that wherever I travel, I make every attempt to visit a university, so I've seen unis in Canada, France, Poland, LIthuania and even Russia!
Last week, I was in Freiburg, Germany, a medieval university city about 1.5 hours from Strasbourg, France. I had the opportunity to learn about the University of Freiburg's Liberal Arts and Sciences Bachelors program: a multidisciplinary approach to liberal arts education, where 85% of students go on to pursue Masters and PhD programs. It is entirely taught in English. Students can dorm the first year. And here's the kicker: the tuition is 3000 Euros per YEAR! That's the cost of ONE CREDIT at most private US universities!
The university was established in 1457 and is renowned as a top German uni. In fact, the liberal arts were the cornerstone of Freiburg's education model in its earliest years.
Students can major in Life Sciences; Culture and History; Governance; or Environmental and Sustainability Studies. Class sizes tend to hover at about 20. There is a core curriculum and opportunity to take electives. Students must take two years of German, but you're in Germany: why wouldn't you?
There is an alumnus chapter here in NYC, which will provide excellent networking opportunities to students at the school who want to return to the US upon graduation.
I was very impressed. I want more US students to consider looking at schools outside of the US, especially as we become an increasingly seamless global economy.
Students can work in Germany during the school year.
The school has many exchange programs as well, with renowned schools such as Uppsala (Sweden); Maastricht (Netherlands); Birmingham and Warwick (UK).
