Shian Meeks- Bates is a 2016 graduate of Chapmanville Regional High School.
During her time at CRHS she participated in softball, basketball and volleyball.
During her softball career, Shian was a four-year starter at shortstop and a
consistent bat in the lineup. As a senior, she hit 12 home runs and helped lead
the Tigers to the Class AA State Championship. That season, she earned First
Team All-State and All-Tournament Team honors and was selected to participate
in the 2016 North-South All-Star Game. She was also a four-time First Team AllCardinal Conference selection (2013–2016) and received Honorable Mention
recognition in 2015. Throughout her career, she helped lead the Lady Tigers to
three sectional championships (2013, 2015, and 2016), a regional championship
(2016), and the 2016 Class AA State Championship.
Shian was also a four-year member of the Lady Tigers Basketball program and a
three-year starting guard whose competitiveness, leadership, and dedication
made her a valuable contributor throughout her high school career. A consistent
presence on both ends of the court, she earned All-Cardinal Conference honors
from 2014 to 2016 and served as team captain during her senior season.
In addition, Shian was a member of the CRHS volleyball team during her
sophomore and senior seasons, helping lead the Lady Tigers to a state
tournament appearance during her senior year. She also received All-Cardinal
Conference honors both years.
Shian was a member of the national honors society and received multiple
awards and scholarships one of which being the Danny Godby Scholarship.
Following high school, Shian continued her softball career at West Virginia State
University, where she competed for five seasons after receiving an additional
year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout her time at WVSU,
she earned a reputation for her consistency, reliability, and leadership both on
and off the field. Defensively, she finished her career with a .919 fielding
percentage, while offensively she compiled a .289 career batting average.
During her sophomore season, she helped lead the Yellow Jackets to the 2018
Mountain East Conference (MEC) Championship. She was also a member of the
teams that captured the MEC South Division regular-season titles in 2019 and
2021. In February 2020, she was named Mountain East Conference Player of the
Week for the week of February 3 for hitting .462 with 2 home runs and 4 RBIs,
just before the season was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic. She was
recognized with the 2020 West Virginia State University Female Sportsmanship
Award, reflecting the respect she earned from teammates, coaches, and
competitors.

Alex Berry

Alex Berry, the son of Bo and Christina Berry, is a 2016 graduate of Chapmanville Regional High School, where he excelled as a two-sport athlete, playing football and baseball.

On the football field, he was a three-year starting quarterback for Head Coach George Barker. During his career, he completed 358 of 594 passes (60%) for 4,973 yards and accounted for 64 total touchdowns (58 passing and 6 rushing).

As a senior, he helped lead the Tigers to a 7-3 record and the second home playoff game in school history. He completed 165 of 251 passes (66%) for 2,345 yards and 31 touchdowns. Memorable performances included throwing six touchdown passes in a victory over rival Scott and connecting on a 32-yard touchdown pass with 17 seconds remaining to defeat an undefeated Man team.

He was selected All-State and First-Team All-Conference honors following both his junior and senior seasons and was named Second-Team All-Conference after his sophomore season.

On the baseball diamond he was a three year starter as a middle infielder and pitcher while playing for Head Coach Eric Ellis.

During his senior baseball season, he posted a .414 batting average and a 9-0 pitching record with a 2.41 ERA, 43.2 innings pitched, and 53 strikeouts for a team that finished 25-5. He earned Second-Team All-State and First-Team All-Conference honors and was selected to play in the 2016 West Virginia North-South Game.

As a junior, he had a .337 batting average and was 4-1 as a pitcher and helped the team to a State Runner-Up finish with a 30-6 record. He hit a game winning 2 run-HR in a sectional game vs Scott to win 2-0 and help the Tigers advance that season. He was named First-Team All-Conference and Honorable Mention All-State after his junior season and was named Second-Team All-Conference after his sophomore year.

After high school, Alex attended West Virginia State University, where he made the Dean's List each semester and graduated in 2020 with a degree in History. He is currently a Social Studies teacher at Chapmanville Middle School and resides in Alum Creek, West Virginia, with his wife, Hollie, and their son, Baker.
