NCSMA serves scholastic journalism and works for its advancement. It is part of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The NCSMA Statewide Media Contest deadline to submit all entries in all categories is May 1.
Students have the opportunity to submit their student media from the 2025-2026 academic year to be judged. Schools can submit to both the section contests and over 50 individual contest categories.
The contest deadline is May 1 for broadcast, online news, radio, podcasts, newspaper, yearbook and literary magazine.

With grateful hearts, we remember the scholastic journalism legacy of Dr. Kay Phillips Redding, former director of the North Carolina Scholastic Media Association. Kay was involved with NCSMA since the 1970s, serving as a high school journalism adviser, Scholastic Media Institute instructor and as the first full-time NCSMA director from 1994 to 2001.

The North Carolina High School Journalist of the Year application is now open!
The winner will receive the $3,000 Rachel Rivers-Coffey Scholarship, and three alternates each receive $1,000 scholarships.
