400+ students, 119 projects and one very full Fetzer Gym. HackNC 2026 was a good one. 🫧

Hackers came from all over. We met students from UVA, NC State, ECU, UNCW, UNC Charlotte and Campbell, and that’s just the folks we got to talk to.

The theme was Frutiger Aero. If that’s new to you, picture Windows Vista wallpapers, bubbles, aqua water and shiny buttons. The students clearly knew it:

🐟 A finance game hosted by a fish named Gill Gates

🎧 A music player that learns your taste using a simulated fruit fly brain

🌊 A reef that sends you kind messages when you’ve had a bad day

🕺 A dance game the team says runs on “outdated IoT tech,” which feels right for the theme

Others went after real-world problems. Scrub+, a solo project inspired by a parent’s heart surgery, lets surgeons move through 3D CT scans with hand gestures and voice, so they never have to break sterility to touch a mouse. Another team turned a $25 security camera into a vein finder to help nurses get an IV on the first try. 🩺

We also saw a smartwatch that helps calm kids with special needs, a dance app for people with low vision, an interior design planner and a tool that turns any idea into a LEGO set you can actually build. 🧱

Two nights. 400+ students. 30 companies. 🩵🩵🩵

Our hybrid career fair was packed with happy faces, and we loved every minute of it. It was exciting to meet so many new employers, and just as good to see familiar ones back again. Best part? So many of the company reps were UNC CS alums, back to meet the students who are where they once were.

We told one employer how much our students enjoyed meeting their team.

Their reply:

“Your students were very popular with us too! We have quite a few that really impressed us! So excited to see who we get to hire! Thanks for being such a great partner!”

Thank you to every company that showed up for our students, and to every student who showed up ready and locked in! 🐏

“You’re doing amazing. UNC CS is better because you’re here.” 💌

That’s one of dozens of notes left on the wall in Sitterson today. The CS Student Experience Ambassadors hosted Write a Letter, Take a Letter, and students filled every envelope with advice, encouragement, and at least one message from Spider-Man. 🕷️

Thanks to everyone who wrote one, took one, stopped by to say hi, and enjoyed Chick-fil-A and boba 🧋

Last night, a group our amazing students (who’ve been there and done that) sat down to share how they landed their internships and what they wish they’d known sooner.

Here’s some of their sage advice and tips:

💡Show up in person. Career fairs, open houses, company events, hackathons. Cold applying turns you into a number. Meeting a recruiter puts a face behind the resume.

💡Build connections to build connections, not just to land a job. The UNC alumni network is more generous than you think. They have been in your place!

💡Pick ONE LeetCode resource and stick with it. Learn the patterns, skip the random problems. And remember: not every company does LeetCode. Plenty of local employers with UNC ties hire on projects and conversation.

💡Don’t know the answer in an interview? Ask a follow-up, explain your thinking, check if you’re on the right track. That’s what they’re actually testing.

💡Behavioral rounds are your chance to talk yourself up. Use STAR, be yourself, take up the space.

💡Go to class. Your professors are really smart. (Their words, not ours. Okay, ours too.)

💡Read the careers newsletter. Keep LinkedIn current. Join a club. Work on a project.

Raghavendra Pothukuchi designs brain-computer interfaces to study the brain’s activity, treat diseases and more.

Brain-computer interfaces are small devices that can read and interact with electrical signals in the brain.

In their simplest forms, these interfaces have existed since the 1960s. In more recent decades, these devices have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration to compensate for aberrant brain activity in diseases such as epilepsy and Parkinson’s, thereby alleviating symptoms for patients.

“I recognized BCIs as a way to directly help people with debilitating conditions — people who are in desperate need,” said Pothukuchi, an assistant professor in UNC Computer Science .“It was a way to connect to people and serve society.”

Pothukuchi joined The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2025, and he’s already struck up partnerships with biomedical engineers, neuroscientists and neurosurgeons from around the University.

Further, he has enjoyed working with experts in law, ethics and policy who can inform the societal impacts of these technologies — during the design phase, not as an afterthought.

“It says a lot about the culture here,” Pothukuchi said. “Others see something that we can do together and say, ‘let’s join forces.’”

This weekend in Sitterson, we hooded our newest doctors and welcomed them into the ancient and universal company of scholars. 🎓

A PhD in computer science is no small thing. Years of research, qualifying exams, a dissertation that took on a life of its own, a defense, and somewhere along the way — a question worth spending your career chasing. This year’s cohort tackled questions across real-time systems, machine learning for healthcare, language models, computer vision, telepresence, private messaging, and more.

Behind every hood is an advisor who believed, collaborators who worked late nights in labs, and a fan club who showed up with flowers and the loudest cheers in the building.

To the partners, parents, and friends who held it all together: thank you. A PhD is never a solo endeavor.

Congratulations to our newest doctors. The title is well-earned. 💙
