A circle is a shape, but an apple has form.

Form describes something three-dimensional, whether it is an actual sculpture or an object made to look three-dimensional in a drawing or painting. In The Basket of Apples, Cézanne used color, value, and carefully placed brushstrokes to give the fruit volume and weight.

Students in our weekly art classes learn how the elements of art work together. Through a comprehensive, sequential curriculum, they move beyond simply making pictures and begin understanding how artists create them.

Intro to Art gives them a place to put all of that to good use. Students explore new materials, learn foundational art skills, and practice listening, observing, and making their own creative decisions.

Some things in art simply can’t be rushed.

Clay needs time to dry. Paint layers may need to be built gradually. Detailed work requires students to slow down and give each step the attention it deserves.

Art helps children experience the satisfaction that comes from taking their time and seeing a project through from beginning to end.

Our Homeschool program gives students the opportunity to work with a variety of art materials, learn new techniques, and complete thoughtfully developed projects in a small-class setting. It’s dedicated time for art instruction, creative problem-solving, and learning alongside other students.

How can paint make lace, fabric, hair, and skin appear to have completely different textures?

In Woman at Her Toilette, Berthe Morisot used loose, visible brushstrokes to suggest soft fabric, delicate lace, and the changing reflections of light. Instead of carefully outlining every detail, she allowed the texture and movement of her brushwork to bring the scene to life.

Students can explore texture through drawing, painting, printmaking, clay, collage, and other media. Because our classes meet weekly throughout the school year, they have opportunities to work with a much broader range of materials and techniques than any single project could provide.
