Why do YOU support girls' education?

Thank you to all who came and contributed to our fundraising event "ACTs 4 Girls' Education" in partnership with ACTS!, the community service committee of the Organization for African Students' Interests and Solidarity (OASIS).

Watch the clip below as our UNC community tells us why they support girls' education!

"...Women serve in so many roles, in so many different ways. The woman plays the role of a teacher to teach her family. She is a counselor for everyone..."

"...As you see, we serve as mentors to our girls (scholars) for the purposes of educating them and helping in their leadership development, so they become good leaders, to make sure that they succeed in their goals..."

"...We are proud to be women!"

Salha, S4Si mentor (2008-present)

"I'm happy to be a woman, and I also believe that all women are blessed. Also, as a mentor, I am happy to be contributing to the goals and achievements of our S4SI gals."

"One of my favorite quotes is: 'be the woman who fixes another woman's crown, without telling the world that it was crooked.'"

Sophy, S4Si mentor (2008-present) and gender and women's rights activist,

03/11/2019

"Mentoring acts as an instrument to facilitate female education through the knowledge and skills we have as teachers and gender activists. We serve many roles and have many hats: as counselors, parents, and even 'doctors' to our girls, through the different challenges they face."

Muhaymina, S4Si mentor (2008-present)

Words on International Women's Day and female role models from S4Si alumna Hudhaifat, now a university student studying medicine with hopes of becoming a doctor:

"Women's day is a very special day, all over the world. Some women who have been role models to me are my three mentors. (Salha, Muhaymina and Sophy). These are women whom I have always been proud to know. They have been like a family to me. I remember the rime when Salha got very sick and was in the hospital for a long time but she still didn't stop committing herself to make sure that every student was fine. They have been always encouraging us to do well. My family also considers them as part of our family. They have their own jobs, but never stop bringing about positive change. They are the women Zanzibar should be really proud of! Salha is known in many schools and by the Ministry for her hard working. Sophy is very famous, especially in her involvement with Sauti za Busara (Zanzibar's International Music festival). Muhaymina inspires me as she is always striving for the best, especially in her pursuit of gaining more skills and experiences through travelling. Women's day should not be a simple day. It should be celebrated as a special day because every day, women are changing the world, and without them (us), the world cannot go well."

We asked our scholars on their thoughts concerning International Women's Day and Women's history month. Here is a quote from Sanelha, one of our current scholars, a high school senior:

"The woman I admire and the one who inspires me the most is mom.
She has taught me and has supported me in my education and dreams! "

We asked our scholars on their thoughts concerning International Women's Day and Women's history month. Here is a quote from one of our alumna, Sumaiya, who is now a first year university student studying Economics:

"A woman should not feel less, even as a housewife....And we shouldn't let anything stop us just because we are women."

~Sumaiya, S4Si c/o 2018
