At the start of each Honors Semester in Cape Town, we leave the Mother City to get some context around what the rest of South Africa is about. The amazing Bulungula Incubator was on our agenda this year. It is an incredible organization that works alongside the community to empower people to improve their lives. Take a look here at just one of their incredible initiatives.

NHI lessons for deep rural South Africa – Bhekisisa For years, this mother in the rural Eastern Cape had to travel across a river and walk for two hours to get to a clinic. Then, her community teamed up with a nonprofit and the provincial health department to change that. These days, the furthest she has to walk to get her newborn to a nurse is five....

"Having to navigate the two realities and all that came along with them made me acutely aware of spaces I inhabited," he explains. "A lot of my photography deals with issues around space and how space is created, who's in the space, who creates it and what happens to the space when different people occupy it."

Honors Semester in Cape Town wrestles with these vast inequalities. The program seeks to learn alongside and build a better society alongside the people doing the hard work of reversing the legacies of colonialism and apartheid.

UNC Honors Semester in Cape Town has decided to postpone the fall semester in favor of a spring 2021 start in light of current travel restrictions and public health concerns.

We can't wait to get the next amazing group of students to Cape Town in January!
