ARTVSM Studios is a center for Black culture and for merging worlds of Art + Activism, by any medium necessary. Art is a vital tool necessary for social change.

ARTVSM engages in movement building with and through hip hop, producing workshops, teach-ins, festivals, web-series, radio programs, albums and graphic novels, in collaboration with an international community of cultural activists. The studio facilitates international dialogue and cultural exchange, as part of a new model for Pan-African organizing across Africa and its Diaspora. ARTVSM creates projects and spaces which position artists as change agents to uplift and transform with communities.

TODAY Ben Sollee a world-class cellist and composer will be at ARTVSM Studios (179 E Franklin St., Chapel Hill) composing and recording with local musicians. If you ever wanted to add live strings to your beat, or film, or wanted a license-free sample to make music out of, he's donating his time free of charge. Just show up with your instrumentals, videos, or songs at 6PM, and we'll run the session here at the studio!

Did yall tune into to NPR this afternoon? You might have caught a glimpse of Cristo Negro | Diablo Blanco - a collection of beats, poems and pictures inspired by the Congo tradition of Panama. In case you missed it...

This Panamanian Carnival tradition manages to make blackface 'playful' and 'emancipatory' In Portobelo, Panama, a local spin on the Carnival holiday celebrates Africans who escaped from Spanish slavery. But while it features "Diablos" with whips and kids wearing blackface, an American academic who works with locals says it's a powerful, celebratory metaphor.
