Insite: Asia First pan-Asia National Resource Center in the southeast U.S. located at UNC-CH To find out more, please visit our website at carolinaasiacenter.unc.edu.

The Carolina Asia Center is the University of North Carolina’s flagship organization for Asia-related activities. In 2014, we became the first Title VI-funded pan-Asia National Resource Center in the southeast United States. Our mission is to positively transform our understanding of and relationship with Asia and to equip students and others with the knowledge of Asia to assume leadership roles. We develop resources for engagement with Asia-related topics through seminars, language study, outreach, cultural competency, study abroad and visiting scholars programs. We work with UNC-Chapel Hill’s College of Arts and Sciences and various professional schools, departments, centers and student organizations on campus. Beyond Carolina, we collaborate with regional and international institutions to develop and implement educational programs on Asia. Our programs have been supported by the Freeman Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, the Japan Foundation, the Korea Foundation, the Thai Government, and through our close partnerships with Duke University and the UNC system of universities and community colleges.

In honor of 's Diplomacy Week 2026, throwback to the time that UNC's President was a crucial diplomat in the independence of Indonesia. Dr. Frank Porter Graham led the Committee of Good Office of the United Nations in Fall 1947 through the Renville Agreement in 1948, leading to the first treaty signed jointly by the Netherlands and Indonesia leading towards Indonesian independence. "Dr. Frank," as he was called, is seen here sitting in conversation with Indonesia's first president Sukarno and the Deputy Foreign Minister at the time, Haji Agus Salim.

Thanks for a great Asia Week 2026! We had a fantastic run--six days of events showcasing UNC's connections to Asia:

-Monday we played Japanese video games in the Greenlaw game room with (not pictured)

-Tuesday .crosser exhibited pictures from her study abroad in Thailand with the in "A Rainbow of Asia"

-Wednesday the and fellowship winners from 2026 including (Parag Jyoti Saikia, seated left), Preethi Saravanan (seated center) and (standing to present) recounted their fieldwork

-Thursday, some 70 students, faculty, and community members gathered to celebrate Korean Thanksgiving (Chuseok) and watch the film Smugglers (not pictured)

-Friday, hosted a mid-Autumn celebration, featuring a culture quiz, games, music, and dancing

-Later Friday, brought over 100 people to the FedEx GEC for a tea night

-At the same time, four returned shared about Chuseok based on their study abroad experiences in Korea, including snacks and crafts

-To wrap up the week, the Chinese Language Teacher Association of North Carolina had its conference on Saturday, kicking off with a keynote speech by Prof. Qiaona Yu of (slide 6), and gathering 50 Chinese language educators from across the state

Come join us to learn about opportunities for student scholarships on South Asia, and sample some samosas and chai. This panel will feature three winners of student scholarships on South Asia, speaking about their work in summer 2026:

- Parag Jyoti Saikia, winner of the Koneru R. Rao Global Fellowship for 2026, will speak on his anthropological fieldwork in Assam

- Preethi Saravanan, winner of the graduate Mahatma Gandhi Fellowship for 2026, will speak on her public health and medical anthropology research with South Asian diaspora communities in North Carolina

- Rhea Bakshi, winner of the undergraduate Mahatma Gandhi Fellowship for 2026, will speak on her community engagement with artisans in Rajasthan
