The Healthy Native North Carolinians Network met to facilitate sustainable community changes by supporting health and wellness within North Carolina’s tribes and urban Indian organizations through leveraging common goals and resources.
We were hosted by the Waccamaw Siouan tribe, introduced to and given a tour of the community, their healing green-space, participated in corn necklace making, and our peer participants presented their HNNC funded projects. We love seeing these initiatives grow and change, informed by their successes and intra-tribal collaboration.

During this American Indian Health Listening Session, we will gather tribal citizens’ health perspectives, discuss tribal health priorities for community members, and determine gaps in our state-level tribal health infrastructure. We want to use this information to plan future Tribal health initiatives that serve American Indians across North Carolina.

Day 3 of Carolina Horizons was by far one of our favorite days! We started out with taking some group photos in The Gift before transition over to the Stone Center for our Mini-College Fair!
During the fair, our participants were able to engage with 17 different college/universities in North Carolina! After this, our participants had the opportunity to build upon connections made at the college fair by have lunch with come of our campus partners.
Next, Kim Marobella from UNC Office of Scholarships and Student Aid presented on FAFSA and shared how our participants can pay for college without the panic.
Finally, participants were able to hear from Carolina Horizons alumni & current college students at UNC, NC State, and UNCP about some of their must-know college tips and tricks. Be sure to stay tuned as we highlight each day of Carolina Horizons 2026!

Carolina Horizons Day 2 started out with some icebreakers before transitioning to our college application session (From OG to PhD) led by Dr. Leslie Locklear (Lumbee, Coharie, and Waccamaw Siouan)), Director of American Indian Education with NC Department of Public Instruction. After this, we learned some test taking skills, courtesy of A Plus Test Prep and spent some time working on our college essays. Finally, we ended the day by participating in a powwow fit workshop led by Jasmine Jacobs Cummings (Waccamaw Siouan) and a self-awareness session centered around self-empowerment, composure, and recognition of how to strategically move in one’s environment led by Gavin Bell (Lumbee). Be sure to stay tuned as we highlight each day of Carolina Horizons 2026!

The USDA Safeguarding National Heritage Camp at UNCP offers students the ability to explore STEM and environmental fields.
They came to the AIC to learn about our programming and ended with an AICG tour; this was part of a larger visit to UNC’s campus. They met with NCBG the following day.

This program is hosted by UNCP Office for Regional Initiatives and sponsored by USDA APHIS.
