SOAR - STEAM Outreach Achievement Recreation at UNC

Last week, Las Guapitas y Los Caballeros put their nutrition knowledge and cooking skills to the test! The menu of the afternoon consisted of arroz con leche, empanadas and fajitas—can someone say que rico?!

This week, las guapitas y los cabarellos spent some time reflecting on who they are with an Identity Day! Vision boards were made, laughs were had—all while learning more about their identidad y lugar on this 🌎

Well, that was a wrap. Today was our last day together with both Guapitas and Caballeros. The parent night event turned out great! And lots of parents got to learn more about us. Here you can see the video with an overview of what we did this academic year! Hasta pronto!

Monday Monday Monday , Los Caballeros and Las Guapitas were having fun in the sun today.
Switching sports to stay active, and on their toes ensured everyone was having a good time. Be sure to come back and tune in for S.O.A.R’s last week, next week as we celebrate with family night dinner.

S.T.E.A.M DAYYYYYYY!!!! That’s right today was S.O.A.R.’s semester S.T.E.A.M day which was made of various stations ran by mentors while Los Caballeros and Las Guapitas rotated around. There were 4 stations which included marshmallow architecture, Slime creation, circuits and lights, and electromagnetic ink. Both the mentors and the mentees had tons of fun while incorporating S.T.E.A.M ideas.

What’s that smell? It smells really good, yeah you guessed it Los Caballeros and Las Guapitas were cookin’ up a feast. Today was a joint day combining Los Caballeros and Las Guapitas together in one room making it extra fun. With the help of the mentors and the kid’s super chef skills there were chicken quesadillas, a delicious guacamole and Pico, mini guava and cream cheese puff pastry made to satisfy any craving. There was a lot of team work from the cutting of the vegetables to the serving and cleaning up. Eating was one of the most rewarding aspects of the day due to the contribution from each Caballero and Guapita. Catch us coming out of our food comas next Monday!

WERE BACKKKK!!!After a week off the mentors all had their batteries recharged and ready for SOAR. Los Caballeros experienced some miscommunication and had a lower turn out than usually causing a change in the schedule. Los Caballeros watched Nacho libre for a while and then went outside and tried Ultimate frisbee for the first time. The mentors and Los Caballeros were having a blast and found out that some of Los Caballeros has a hidden talent for playing the game. Las Guapitas also had a fun day playing Hispanic bingo AKA la lotteria. And some of Las Guapitas went outside to paint enjoying the beautiful weather. Its going to be a sad week next week Las Guapitas and Los Caballeros

Another Monday has come and gone. Los Caballeros and Las Guapitas were back on the grind. Las Guapitas used the day to discuss healthy relationships having full participation, and active listeners. Las Guapitas stared by making a word web on what good and bad relationships looked like to see what others were thinking. Followed by a presentation Mentors led which filled in some gaps and assisted Las Guapitas in solidifying the differences in a health and not healthy relationship . Las Guapitas took advantage of the nice weather, and went outside to play a card game that revolved around what they learned in the presentation. Los Caballeros were also engaging in a deep conversation centered around drugs. Los Caballeros love to joke around, but understood that today was business. Los Caballeros’ mentors led a presentation with a game integrated throughout to keep the boys on their toes. There was deep and whole discussions at every group, and Los Caballeros wrapped it up by sharing their life goals with one another. The Final activity was 2 random Caballeros were chosen to give a mini presentation/update on how their S.M.A.R.T academic and personal goals were coming along. As all of the Caballeros’ mentors know on a beautiful day they had to go out and PLAY!!!!

Monday ….. the most dislike day of the week by everyone except Los Caballeros and Las Guapitas!! Today in S.O.A.R las Guapitas took a day for selfcare relaxing, and talking about the importance of taking care of yourself. Las Guapitas Mentors came strapped with canvas paints, fingernail polish, and makeup kits on deck so everyone could enjoy any one of the activities. Las Guapitas wrapped up the day by cleaning up and reflecting on the selfcare they had just completed. Los Caballeros went on to attempt a science experiment that involved metallic ink and oil. As los Los Caballeros and Mentors learned today not all experiments are successful, but from the unsuccessful experiment they hypnotized where issues arose in the experiment. Then the mentors and Caballeros paired up, and talked about progress or setbacks in completing the goals they set for themselves in the previous week. After this the Los Caballeros were beyond ready to go outside and throw the pig skin around. That was all for Los Caballeros and Las Guapitas this week, comeback next week to stay up to date on new activities.

It’s the first SOAR Meeting of the year. We were all glad to be reunited with Los Caballeros and Las Guapitas, and catch up with them. Today los Caballeros had introductions to each other and 2 new mentors Steve and Darvinash. Later splitting off into groups and working on creating S.M.A.R.T goals to achieve academic mile stones. To top off the first day board games were busted out and things got intense. Las Guapitas had plenty of fun activities throughout the day as well. They had a hula hoop line which was a blast. Then transitioned to working on team building activities. Improving on their already great chemistry. Reflecting and disusing why working in teams is so critical to many parts of life. That was all for this week, but there is more to come!
