someone’s loved one came to me last
night- you may have found her just
after she passed - she gave me a flash
of you being scared finding her
on the floor before backing me way
out to the yard with you on a happier
day - she lived in a green trailer or home
with green corrugated siding and some
cinder block steps up to her door
and it was fairly recent - because
there are some power wheels in
the dirt, parked like we all just finished
playing with them off to the right and
to the left there’s a big ol tree and i
can see the roots a lil bit stuck down
exposed into the quartz and it isn’t
here the dirt is all golden but it’s
someplace close enough because when
she stands in the doorway with her
calico dress and peter pan collar on
leaning on the one arm and wind going
thru her feathery wisps of white curly
pinned back hair and called down to
us but especially you, who she made
it clear it was her favorite, she says,
“y’all come on in for supper!” and when
we don’t she says, turning her back so
that all I see of her is the calico, fading,
“come back anytime, I mean it”.

choosing balance, i have been absent of late from _____

It has come to my attention that I
was missed, or at least my money was,
last week, and the better half of this,
at the hospital I have spent nearly
twenty years in a bad faith mystery
novel who-dunnit party. I am writing
to its doctors, to its nursing shortage,
of course to its never-ending ticker-tape
parade of red red tape and the yellow
fall risk bracelets they dutifully slap on
with misgenderings and wrong names
at the front desks of clinics of so many
held in high esteem to say (kindly):
f**k off for a few weeks. That’s what I
at least plan to do. Having been sick or
told I was my whole life, I decided to
spend this spring among the wisteria
woods and people frantically buying up
the specialty tomato plants. Did you
know about a cuban oregano plant?
I now have one in my kitchen! I may
still be sick next week, but I will be
happier and my pizza will have a brand
new spice. At this age, I live for the look
on my girlfriend’s face when I surprise
her with flowers, and reschedule a day
of appointments, recuperating from having what at one time I would have
called easily too much fun. Ultrasounds
and MRIs can wait, but seeing the 3 sisters come up in the garden or the poppies turn from fuzz to flower or the serene face of my child in the morning on waking - it all only happens now.
