Carolina Alumni Carolina Alumni is the alumni association of UNC, where it’s a Great Day to Be a Tar Heel.

Our mission is to strengthen your lifelong connection to Carolina with a vision of bringing the Tar Heel spirit to you, wherever you are in the world. Carolina Alumni initiatives support 32,234 students and 367,007 alumni and friends of the University, creating a dynamic community that reflects the values and traditions of Carolina. We do this through a variety of programs, networking opportunities, alumni career services and more — ensuring the Carolina connection remains strong and vibrant. Driven by alumni and independent of University funding, we’re united in our commitment to keep the Carolina connection strong for generations to come.

Meet Janet Southerland ’82 (’84 BSDH, ’89 DDS, ’94 MPH, ’05 PhD), a Charlotte native who pushed herself as far as she could go. And now, as the chair of the Light on the Hill Society Scholarship, she’s on a mission to support students who remind her of herself.

From bacon, egg and cheese to salted kaya toast, Maura McCarthy '12 ('16 MA), founder of Bold Batch Creamery, isn't afraid to get creative with her ice cream flavors. She discovered her love of ice cream after the pandemic upended her career in international education. Now, her inventive flavors draw from her travels, southern roots, Raleigh community and, of course, her time at Carolina.

Two Carolina alumni have been named 2026 MacArthur Fellows, an honor often called a “genius grant” that recognizes individuals whose work is making a significant impact in their fields. Each fellow receives $800,000 over five years to support their work with no restrictions on how the funds are used.

Felipe De Brigard '11 (PhD), a philosopher and cognitive scientist at Duke, studies memory and its connections to imagination, morality and forgiveness. Elizabeth Ellis '12 (MA, '15 PhD), a historian at Princeton, researches Indigenous politics and diplomacy in early North America, highlighting the strategies, knowledge and influence of Native nations.

This marks the second year in a row a Carolina graduate has been selected. Since the foundation began its fellowship program in 1981, six Carolina alumni and two faculty members have been selected as MacArthur fellows.

A sight to see: Chimney swifts circle the skies above the Davie Poplar before disappearing into the tree’s hollow trunk to roost at dusk.
 
This phenomenon has occurred on campus for the past few years, with the swifts returning to the Davie Poplar each night in early fall before continuing their journey south in mid-October.
 
Last year, the UNC Institute for the Environment used thermal imaging to estimate that more than 1,900 swifts were inside the tree on a single night. Swifts are rarely documented roosting in trees, making their choice of this campus icon all the more remarkable.
