From the Carolina Alumni Review: In 1957, at the age of 11, Dolly Parton recorded her first commercial record in Lake Charles, Louisiana. The vinyl record is on display as part of the Southern Folklife Collection at Wilson Library.

We had a blast at Camp Blue Heaven, Carolina Alumni’s family camp weekend, this month. ⛰️🤩

There’s nothing like a reset in the N.C. mountains with swimming, crafts, water slides and more, especially when you get to do it all with Tar Heels. 🩵

Who’s watching Outer Banks season five this weekend? ✋ Did you know two of the minds behind the show are Tar Heels? 🩵

Shannon Burke ‘88 and Josh Pate ‘92 struck gold with Netflix’s Outer Banks through beachside tales of teen angst, social-strata strife and treasure hunting. The two, along with Pate’s twin brother, Jonas, a 1992 Princeton University graduate, are the creative forces behind the series.

Burke and Josh credit their success to a Carolina education. “I wouldn’t have been a writer if it weren’t for the English department,” Burke said.

“I couldn’t believe you got credit for reading these awesome books. My mind was exploding almost every day. I came out thinking that the most honorable, meaningful thing to do was something to do with writing. The English department definitely changed my life.”

David Gardner ’88, the co-founder of The Motley Fool and a longtime voice in investing, didn't know much about the world of finance and stocks when he graduated from Carolina. But he was curious.

A Morehead Scholar who studied English and creative writing, Gardner eventually brought his writerly instincts and a healthy sense of humor into the emerging world of online investing. Looking back, Gardner credits his Carolina education for opening the door:

“I think one of the benefits of a humanities education is that you end up going, ‘OK, I know a little bit about a lot of different things.’ That is what enabled me and inspired me to pick up something that seemingly was not part of my background.”
