The Old Well is one of the most recognizable symbols of Carolina — but its history is far more complicated than most Tar Heels realize.

From battles over academic freedom to moments of political unrest, the Old Well has stood at the center of some of the University’s most defining chapters.

On Saturday, May 9, the class of '26 filled Kenan Stadium, ready to begin their next chapter with a family of alumni and four years of Carolina memories they'll carry with them forever.

The class of '76 joined them on the field, celebrating 50 years of experiences and cheering the next generation on with high-fives. This is what Carolina is all about: a moment 50 years in the making.

On Memorial Day, we pause to remember the Carolina alumni who gave their lives in military service. Their names, inscribed in bronze, comprise the Carolina Alumni Memorial in Memory of Those Lost in Military Service. The memorial was dedicated in 2007 and is located on campus between Phillips and Memorial halls. Carolina Alumni’s award-winning online edition of this memorial includes a biographical page for each alumnus listed, along with a tool to search by conflict. It can be found at alumni.unc.edu/memorial
